The 'unofficial' 58 Club

Iggy,

Those are some mighty purty stocks.... is there a story on those?

-TS
Nah, if you can believe it, back in 1966, I destroyed the PC magnas that came on the gun for the hardware. The stocks are just a block of black walnut with all of the stuff that din't look like a pair of grips removed.

I bought the 58 because I couldn't afford a Combat Magnum at $125.00. Best decision I ever made.

Iggy,

That's a great idea... Hmmm, I do have an old set of non-diamond targets with the speedloader cut out that I might have to play with.

I got my new "S" Model 58 with Pachy's on it and an old brass trigger shoe, so I replaced them with the service magna grips and the T-grip, but I still haven't found another set of reasonable PC magnas for it.

That's quite a pair you have there....having grown up (well, mostly) in San Antonio I have yet to see a SAPD marked 58 in my town....they seem to have lit out for the territories, as they are everywhere but here.

Thanks for sharing.

SAFireman,

As I was born and raised there, this one get's home to visit SA quite often...:D

Mine is kinda homely compared to most shown here.
Obsidian.jpg

Paid $65.00 for it and a box of ammo back in 66.

We've been to the mountain and it got me home.

Iggy, your's is one of the few I've seen aside from mine that has a target trigger and hammer. Did you install the parts or do you know if the gun came that way?

I installed them. That was a very common modification back in the late 60's

Hey Iggy,
What kinda wood you sportin' on that ol' 58? It looks mighty comfortable for shootin' purposes.

conversion?

Love your blade... :)

I think I finally got my 58-44 conversion to shoot to the sights at 25 yards.

Drew,

Is that a 44 magnum or special?

I envision a Keith special there, but that frame should hold up to magnum loads if I recall correctly....Looks good either way.

Well boys, I finally joined the 58 club today.
A grumpy, old, round, fellow that has been holdin' tight to his for years
finally gave it up to me today, July 4th, 2011.
I traded a nice modern model 67 and $350. for it.
Total came out to $775.
It is unfired and has a box that doesn't number to the gun.

I will post pictures in this post tomorrow when I take them.
But I just wanted to post on the 4th of JULY that I finally got one, Officially!

Here are the pictures, taken this morning. My 1972 model 58,the 1980 model 57, and the 657 snuck in at
the last.

Sweet, is it going to be a shooter or safe queen?

I have been tinkering around with the reloads for my 58...now I have these nagging little questions...

Did S&W ever market it with a SWCHP ?

Did/does anyone make any oddities (full wadcutter, SWCHP, ect) in the lead bullet department?

What's the fastest you have run your 210 grainers and still been really close to POA?

What was the slowest 210gr (or lighter) load that still makes POA?

I have seen some reloading threads for the 41, but I am more interested in the loads that are tailored to the 58's.

Thanks guys.

LSWC-HP...no

Specialty rounds in lead...never have seen any...

What's the fastest and still be close to POA...that is going to depend on your shooting style and distance. Out to 20 yards I never have noticed much difference between shooting a 210 JHP at 1300 fps and a LSW at 950... When one starts getting into light weight bullets, like the 170 SilverTips most 58s will shoot low...

If anyone is looking to "join the Club" (or Cult) there is a mint 58 in the box on GunBroker right now...current price is $560.00. Missing the PCs but for a nice shooter if the price is right who cares....

It is too bad that the box doesn't number to the gun...it would be interesting to see if the TT/TH came original from the factory. I have seen one or two 58s with TT/TH with their original boxes that had them listed as original.

They must have made 57s in batches at the factory....1980s is a very very common year for 57s. I have three 57s, a standard, blue Class A and a nickel Class A that were all made in 1980. I bought a 57 from a friend a few years ago and it was a 1980 also...

Bought from a friend in 1983....

Blue and Nickel Class As...also 1980s...

I own a lot of diffrent guns and a lot of diffrent calibers, but I need a Model 58 bad. Something so simple and a great caliber from what I have read. I am on the look out for sure...

Allen,

I don't know how I missed your post...it must have been busy around here on that day ;)

Anyhow....Great looking 58 and even better that you have the trio....I think that you'll be set for a short while :)

Superman - thanks for the info....I have found a few different molds laying about, and I look forward to working up a solid load to keep the 58 happy.

Redbos - keep your eyes open, they are out there....you could always do like I did, and post a WTB ad here on the board... both of mine were located through the kindness of our fellow forum members :D We have a great bunch of guys around here.

Keep em coming guys!

If you cast and want a HP, over on the CastBulletForums they have a Group Buy that is just about to close on a 210 mould that with different pins one can have a solid, round cavity HP or a PentaPoint cavity HP...
