The 'unofficial' 58 Club

Prices for 58s, even on GunBroker, are all over the place. Did a completed auction search over on GB and saw a nice blue one with the correct grips that sold just before Christmas for $530.00...and some clean ones without the correct grips that went for close to $900....

hoser...if you want to get into the Cult...pardon me...Club...a stock set of grips with a Tyler-T is an ok way to go. If you could find a beatup set of target grips you could them sand them down to whatever size that best fits your hand.

I have a set of grips from Schofieldkid81 and if you contact him he may be able to make a set to your hand size...

Bob

Thanks Bob. You say "cult" like it's a BAD thing! ;)

Big 58 fan

New to the forum, but have been a "cult" member for decades.
Have NIB 58 that I bought back in the 70's...and a second that was my holster gun when I was a motor cop back in the 80's...if we qual'ed master with our issued revolvers, we could carry what we wanted, provided we could qual with it....shaved off the hammer spur, carried it it a break front holster. Big gun, big bullets. Still have them both....plan on having them for the duration.

...my kinda guy... In the 11 years I spent with Dallas PD I carried a .357 Magnum for one week while one of my Ns was being repaired. The only revolvers I ever carried on duty always stared with a "4" caliber wise......

6.5" 29-2
4" 29-2
4" 57
4" 58
4" 57
3" 624

Got to finally talk with Peter Pi of CorBon at the SHOT Show last week...turns out he is a Cult member also. When he was in LE he carried a 58 and also has a 57. When he carries a .41 Magnum for personal protection he uses the CorBon DPX with the Barnes copper bullet. Have not tried the CorBon version but have shot the Federal version and the bullet turns inside out and penetrates well...

It also has a softer recoil than the 210s...

..as to Cult....really it is The Cult of the .41...so any .41 owner qualifies... The 58 Owners Club is just one of the sub-sects.... The craziest of the crazies... :-)

Do most of the 210 grain factory loads hit at POA or is there a brand that typically shoots closer than others (I know every gun is different, but just generally speaking, was this gun designed for shooting 210s)?

I like to have lead free, all -copper loads since I live near Condor lead free zone here in CA (don't get me started). Heaviest I've seen is 180gr Barnes. Anyone shoot these through your 58?

Impressive performance

That is impressive performance from the Federal load, I shoot/carry that and the Corbon load also. As far as the "sub-sect" definition goes..." I am home". Glad to be aboard.

From 7-25 yards all but two of the 58s I have had would put most any 210 grain round very close to center. Bullets lighter than 200 grains will usually shoot low and generally the faster the round the lower it will shoot.

The reason that most all copper bullets are under 200 grains is that because of the density of copper compared to lead the copper bullets of 180 grains are as long as the lead ones of 210 grains...

Too bad you can not use a TMJ (total copper plated jacket) as the Berry's plated bullet is excellent.

Also..for those looking for loaded rounds with the Barnes all copper bullet... Graf&Sons has both the Barnes and Federal ammo in stock as of this morning...

Very nice looking thread. I have wanted a 58 ever since my dad had me shooting his 4" model 57 when I was a kid...sadly he sold it years ago.

This is on the top of my bucket list ;)

The grips on the custom 58 above are Craig Spegel's Extended Boot Grips in Brazilian Rosewood. They're a tad longer than his standard extended grips and work very well with my large hands.
Keith

Did you get the "custom-fit" option on those grips? I'm looking at getting a pair.

I agree on the "bucket list". Ever since I sold my M57 deer hunting handgun 5 years ago I have been bidding on M58's and lost every auction. Got serious and purchased a nice one from one of our forum members and am awaiting delivery. Probably paid a little over market but I believe because it is an S model and appears real clean, it was money well spent. A little help on the dates please: S331xxx Glad I still have plenty of .41 ammo left to play with my new bucket list toy! jb
And thanks for this forum!!

Given the choice between a Model 10 and a Model 58 for uniform carry I would take a 10 without hesitation. Most would agree with me. The late Tom Ferguson wrote of ditching his issue 58 for the lighter K frame when he had to walk a beat.[/QUOTE]
Nothing against Tom, but I walked a beat in Amarillo in the 70's with a 58. Model 10 on the downtown beat on saturday night. No thanks.

I have smallish hands. From pix I've seen, the magnas are by far my favorite "looks-wise". Does anyone make any combat style (flush bottom fitting) grips that's comfortable for the 58? I always feel the full size ones look too long for this gun.
hoser,
Take a look at Ahrends Retro Combat grips. I have a set on my model 58, Christmas present to myself . I too have smallish hands and these are perfect fit. I am going to order another set in Retro Target because they are so affordable , good looking and having a slim profile I don't feel like I'm trying to choke a bowling ball as with factory targets. When I get home tonight I will try and post photo's.

Baby's Got Some New Shoes

hoser,
Here are photo's of Ahrends Retro Combat in dark cocobolo, on my model 58. I ordered them unfinisher so I could slim them down...wasn't necessary, they are slim from the maker and didn't need any further work. I really like the fit. I finished them in a tung oil finish and a final wax job.
Sorry I didn't have a shot showing how slim they are, I had one but accidentally deleted it, computer illiterate, will get another when I figure out how to load them into computer. But if you have a problem with fat grips try Ahrends. I'm going to get a few more in different woods and styles for my other S&W's.

hoser,
You asked about the use of Tyler grip adapter along with the magna grips. My 58 came with magna's and a Tyler, I do not like shooting it without the adapter, just not enough grip. With the Tyler it is much better but not great. With the Ahrends....oh yes sir , now is wonderful. They do extend below the bottom of the grip frame but it is just enough to get a good grip with your pinkie finger. The slim profile lets me get a good grip and it does not shift under recoil. The first time I shot it with magna and no Tyler the gun would twist in my grip and the checkering abraded some skin off the palm. 6 shots and I had enough and went looking for a band-aide.

My It gun

As I posted in another post more years ago than I care to think about I had made up my mind that if I were only allowed to own 1 S&W revolver IT would be a model 58 with the then fairly new Armaloy finish. Never did get there despite owning at least 3 blued 58's one of which was a very early first year S serial number and a couple Model 57's and even a Model 657 Mountain Gun.
Well two days ago a fellow put my IT gun up for sale or trade and it turned out that I had just what he needed for the trade. Brought it home yesterday and then to the range today. 1973 vintage, Armaloy, and old nite sight inserts and all.
Smooth as butter double action , crisp single action and one of the most accurate guns I have shot in a long time.
In the pics below the first 3 are of my beast and it's new ride an H.C. Leathers Threepersons rig.
The next picture is of the first 4 cylinders full. range was 15 yards and all shooting was offhand first 6 shots of each load were single action and the next 6 double action.
The center mass group was with an IDPA load supplied by the guy I traded with consisting of 6.5 grains of Trailboss behind a 215 cast SWC @ 800fps. I am responsible for the low shot. Second shot new gun and I loosened the grip just as it went bang.
The headshots were with my plinking loads from 2002 consisting of 6.5 grains of 231 behind a 215 cast SWC @920fps

My IT gun has found me after 30 + years.

New to the cult (after a 20+ yr journey)

Well, it finally happened, I received the nicest M58 I have ever seen on the net at a price I could afford. It replaces my M57 just fine, is accurate as I tested it this PM down at our range and is a real beauty. A bucket list chase that has lasted a long time if finally reality. This is a great site! Thanks folks.jb

GR...I had to read your post several times but it looks like you are saying you preferred the 58 over a 10 any day.... I spent 11 years with Dallas PD and for about 8 of them carried N-Frames as did many of my friends...and not a one ever changed their gun or load unlike all but one of the guys I knew who got into "critical incidents" with a .38...

Combat Driver...showshoes with an 870 with rifle sights...they do get BIG up there don't they...

Chip King...BEAUTIFUL and TOUGH Model 58... Do you know who did the tritium inserts?? I have a parkerized 1964 that shoots great but would love to have it hard chromed with tritium inserts..

SuperMan No I do not know on the inserts but I do have a message in at Trijicon waiting a response to see if they will replace my old ones or have a list of Gunsmiths who are licensed to do the installation. They acknowledged receipt and promised an answer but nothing yet. As soon as I hear anything I will post it here.
