The 'unofficial' 58 Club

...yes...don't shoot that box of ammo...or you will spend a lot of time cleaning the lead out.. The bullets were very soft and will lead up the bore completely in just a few cylinders full.

Good round for bear-backup role is the Federal 250 grain CastCore load. They run 1080 from my 4" .41s and the recoil isn't bad at all.

For a finish also look at hard chrome from Accurate Plating. My daily carry Colt Commander has 7 years of daily use and still looks like new.

Congratulations on the excellent find...and welcome to the Cult!!

Thank you Bob.
I've lusted after a Model 58 for thirty years, or so, and finally got one too call my own. I've shot friend's 57 and 58 resolvers every chance I've had just never broke down and bought one.

What year is the gun??
Late 1964 or early 1965.
Rumor has it that it belonged to a retired LEO that used it as a personally owned duty gun back in the day. It's trigger is smooth but has the holster wear to substantiate the rumor.
I found it a couple of years ago at a local gun shop. I didn't have the funds to buy it at the time but my Buddy did. So he bought it and threw it in his safe. Later I found him two model 657's, which was the gun he really wanted. He bought those too.
In talking with him recently I told him I wanted a model 58 and he sold it to me for what he paid for it.
The rumor of it's providence comes from the clerk at the gun shop that took the gun in on trade. I, and my Buddy, believe him. We've dealt with him for more than a few years and he had no reason to lie.

VERY NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you reloaded for the .41 in the past?

Bob

No I haven't Bob. But I have some brass on the way, along with SNS .41 Mag 215 Grain Semi Wad Cutters. Now to pick up some Lee dies and I should have the powder I need already.

Don't forget the Lee Carbide Factory Crimp Die...

8.0 grains of Unique with a 210 LSWC will just about duplicate the original 210 Police loading at 950 fps from a 4" barrel...

Thanks Bob, I happen to have several cans of Unique.

That's a beauty. I can faintly remember when mine looked like that.

Thanks guys now I need to go open the safe and fondle with my m58. I haven't made her purr in a while.LOL but I never expected a 4" barrel to grow on me.

Somewhere around 1973 a friend and I visited a local sporting good store - back when "sporting goods' in Massachusetts could include guns - and there was a new Model 58 going for whatever list price was back then. I liked it, was going to ask my pop to buy it (and share of course) but my friend pronounced it "too expensive, wait for a better deal ....."

I've been "kind of" looking for one for a while, but in CA these are harder to come by. At last weekend's Reno Gun Show I found a fellow with 5 of them, he's a CA dealer and I grabbed a 1970's made blued NIB - screwdriver, paperwork and cleaning rod included. Now I get to wait another 10 days to pick it up. Glad to finally have one of these, I have a few other Smith 41s and like the caliber alot.
