I don't know how he did it, but I sent a 581 to Carl Sokol years ago for some customization and he had to re-blue it and it came with a flat black bluing too - just like that M58.
 
I might just as well admit it, I'm more into adjustable sighted S&W I can move the sights on to adjust for different loads for. Could never see the high prices on 58s, especially the few that surface every once in a while, I've been looking. I'll stick with my model 57 in four inch. You guys have fun with these.

I have just one 58 . I dropped a pin gauge down the barrel and it stopped where the " roll stamping " on the barrel was . That told me there was a tight spot . 12 rounds of " fire lap " bullets fixed it . It is even more accurate now than before . I fired rounds from mild to wild hand loads , all shot well . I have found owning a set of pin gauges a worth while investment if you shoot revolvers . I went to amazon and got a set for about $100 . I can determine , accurately cylinder throat size and ck a barrel for tight spots from the muzzle to the forcing cone . My group size on my 58 went from almost 5" to 1.5" @ 20 yds after removing the tight spot in the barrel . This was all done using a bench rest , for consistency . Regards, Paul
 
Looks like I just joined the club! Thank you for all the motivation, I couldn't have done it without you...lol.

The serial # is S329. What would the 'correct' typical grip be? It has a rubber grip on it now, which will be removed immediately.
 
Issue grips for that gun were PC Magnas. See post number 1245.
They are rare as whale **** these days.
 
Try a model 57 you'll never go back! All this with adjustable sights.

Ahhhh, with the turndown detail on the sides. If anyone has a spare set they'd like to get rid of, please pm me.

Is it wrong to put Combats on it?
 
I shopped gun broker and in the past have found them . I have purchased 2 sets there . go to " gun parts " scroll down and find " pistol grips " then type " Smith and Wesson Grips " . I actually contacted several of the vendors and asked if they had " PC Magna's " , even though they were not listed . I always got , sooner or later what I wanted ,but it took some patience and effort . Yes , they are very scarce and are getting quite pricey . I doubt you will find anyone here willing to sell a set , but you might . Good Luck , Paul

Model Fifty Eight-esque; aka Combat Masterpiece... on steroids!
Built by Bill Davis Co. Big as era IPPC builders. This gun not; nor built for me. Simply incidental purchaser in late seventies. Pix below & pretty self-explanatory omitting question of 'why'. Nice gun and 'unusual'! SN S2604xx. (Sorry, no essential 'top shot' in my file pix. But looking completely factory-stock'.) The firm made a good job of it!

I remember Bill Davis well but, 58s had non adjustable sights? IIRC Better a model 15 on steriods?

Belated return to be quite clear on this customized 41 Mag 4" gun description. It IS a Model 58, converted to the adjustable sights. The 57 target model was with barrel underlug. Model 15 is a better descriptor because all Mod 58 in the model number era. Otherwise Combat Masterpiece apropos. See my pre-15 CM below (From 1949 - first year production) as K frame 'look alike'.
