The US Navy just took over its newest, largest Destroyer from the Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine. Its its biggest most technically efficient ship in its Destroyer catagory. Its the USS Zumwalt.

Now for the real punchline:

The Zumwalts captain is none other than Captain James Kirk. I wonder if his middle name starts with a "T"? :D Anyway, I think its cool all around.:)

I don't pay as much attention to these things as I should. When I saw your posting I was curios and searched on the Net ro see what there was to see.

From what I read there were 32 of these planned to be built. One has been built and there will be one more. 29 were cancelled. Is that correct? If true, is it just a matter of budget cuts (don't get political) or is there an alternative vessel being built as a substitute?

From reading military related blogs, I believe it's a combination of budget cuts and indecision.

A lot of big ticket procurement projects seem to be either paddling in circles... or circling the drain.

Tis true. Only two more being worked on at this moment. I remember one was named after a vintage Pres. LBJ I believe.

Interesting thing about that picture is I took it off the back of a Vietnam era river boat, they have it at the maritime museum at San Diego and you can for a fee ride it around the bay-so what do you think I HAD to do when I was there traveling with mom? :D

I love to go to old Navy ships on display, the trip last year in San Diego/Los Angeles I got to see the Midway and the Iowa plus I got on the Dolphin submarine :D:D

I also got a close look at the Carl Vincent when we went around the bay the ship where we had Bin Laudin's body after we tagged him.

That sure is a weird looking boat...

Takes some getting used to...

A 14,500 ton destroyer? Errm, yeah, whatever.

I'm interested to read that they intend to build the deckhouse on the last two from steel rather than the composite construction of the Zumwalt. Hope somebody got their topweight sums right on that idea.
