Earlier this week I was out repairing a fence in my pasture from a tree that a storm had blown over on it, and as I was taking a break I thought I saw movement out a couple hundred yards or so across the field. I reached in the truck and pulled out my excellent Steiner binoculars and could see it was a coyote. I reached back in the truck and pulled out my camera and iPhone and walked over behind the downed tree I'd been cutting up, laid the iPhone on top of the truck and selected a baby rabbit call I had downloaded in iTunes.
It didn't seem to take long to get the coyotes attention, so I set up with the camera behind the tree and watched the coyote trot my direction. I lost sight of it for a few moments, but almost ghost-like I saw it standing and looking in my direction from behind a fence row. I stood perfectly still and only moved enough to snap a few pictures. It then jumped the fence and continued to where I was, obviously intent on finding out what was causing that baby rabbit sound.
It came up to within about 25 yards from me when it started to get suspicious that something wasn't quite right. It raised it's nose looking for a scent, and may have picked up something. After a few moments, it turned and went back the way it came, only slipping under the fence this time, and disappeared.
I may be entering the picture of it jumping the fence in the county fair photo contest this fall that my wife and I always seem to compete in each year.
