Today I stopped to get fuel for my car. I pulled in behind a guy that had clearly finished pumping gas, but he was washing his back window. Seriously taking his time about it, I might add.

Anyway, he walks over to the towel dispenser where it proceeds to take ALL the paper towels out. He shoves them in his pocket while keeping one out to use. He wipes the window a time or two and then walks to the other towel dispenser and takes ALL of those as well.

The way I was raised that's just plain theft. I understand using a towel or two while washing your windows, but to take all of them is just wrong to me.

I pulled to anther pump that opened up and filled my car. When I finished, that same guy was still sitting in his car blocking the pump.

There are people like that everywhere and all they do is drive prices up for the rest of us. Motels and Hospitals now have the cheapest towels known to man because customers and patients steal everyone they can get their hands on. One of the worst things I've seen lately is one of our company's crews were out installing windows on a house and the customer snuck around the truck and stole two boxes of large wood screws! We're there doing a $15,000 job for him and he steals $10 worth of screws. If he needed them, all he had to do was ask and the installer would have given them to him but he had to steal them. No one said anything and I'm sure he would claim that he "paid for everything with the job".

I just came off a refinery job. Lots of port a potties and portable wash stations. The was stations have plastic boxes that dispense paper towels. Guys would just open the ttop and take what they needed or wanted. Port a potty company put little padlocks on the plastic lids. When I saw that I laughed. I am sure every one of them got twisted off. I am sure the port a potty company made a ton of money. But, some people will take anything. But, putting tiny padlocks on tiny plastic hasps around a bunch of metal skills guys is stupid. Why not just say "Double dare ya"

At the gym, young people use loads and loads of paper towels to dry their hands. They just make a big ball, dry their hands and stuff it in the trash can. I wear an extra large glove and I rarely need more than two sheets.
I figure at least they both flushed and washed their hands.

Same here, guys making $125k would take the rolls. Just didn't understand that.

I am a member of a private club. Not very many desperately poor folks there. In the rest rooms we have to use locking steel toilet paper dispensers and locking paper towel dispensers because those commodities were stolen faster than they were used for regular purposes.

Salt and pepper shakers on the tables disappear with such regularity that we have to purchase them by the carton, and frequently. Condiments (catsup, mustard, mayonnaise, etc) seem to grow legs of their own.

In the kitchen the refrigerators and freezers are kept under lock and key, and we still lose meat, cheese, and other goodies by the case-load on a regular basis.

Our vending machines were being vandalized so frequently that we gave up trying to operate our own, just contracted those functions out to others.

I remember once seeing water flowing out from under the ladies room door. When I investigated I found that the drain pipes under the vanity sinks had been kicked apart.

For evening events we have to hire security guards to patrol the parking lots, but that has not eliminated car break-ins and vandalism.

Security cameras throughout the building and on all exits and the parking lots. All that provides is moderately entertaining videos of petty crimes on a regular basis.

Our cleaning staff has frequently reported problems with vagrants and bums causing problems when they come in early in the morning to clean up the place. Our bar staff can't lock up and leave at night without security escorts.

All of this at a private club where applicants must be interviewed and allowed to join, and pay membership fees.

Convenience stores, big box parking lots, gas stations, public libraries, and other places where anybody and everybody can come and go as they choose? Anything goes anymore.

Many building jobs the petty theft is so bad that when they put in temporary lights they use special bulbs with a reverse thread.
Our thieves wee rather creative, they would steel the reverse thread bulb out of the sockets till they had a lot. Then the goniffs would take the wire strings that had the reverse sockets on them.

Also I sometimes worked part time at the Port of Albany as a stevedore when in my late teens and we had one person there that when on board a ship if it was not nailed down he would take it. He was well know for his light fingers. After he finished the job and left the ship bulbs soap, paper, and real towels and anything else he could take all went home with him.

My employer had "tri-fold" towels as well as rolls of standard TP. Last year all were replaced with locked towel dispensers that cut in foot long sections and giant rolls of single ply TP. Stuff disappeared wholesale. Entitlement mentality is a "mental cancer." Joe

Worked 20 years for one of the best paying companies in my area. It was unbelievable for what employees were paid they would steal anything that wasn’t nailed down! Toilet paper, trash bags, leather work gloves. There were certain things in our storeroom that could only be had by a supervisors signature because the item was constantly stolen.
People used to say things to me about how this was going on and my reply always was, I’m not a thief and anyway I make enough money here that I don’t have to steal.
It was really pathetic what some people thought the company owed them!

I used to eat at Taco Bell and other fast food places. It was amazing how many reasonably prosperous looking people would loot the condiments and napkin dispensers.

I can see taking a couple of extra napkins to stash in the truck, but emptying the whole dispenser?

In the late 80's I was headed up I-95 to New Hampshire. Going into NYC there was a traffic snarl on a bridge where no one was moving. I noticed a car off to the side out of the traffic lanes with the guy doing the stare into the open hood thing. Older car, can't recall any approximate age.

After a bit, he looked around, slammed the hood, kicked the fenders & doors a few times and started hiking over the bridge. He wasn't completely out of sight over the curve of the bridge before his car was being stripped.

Over the decades I've been astounded at what people with really well paying jobs will steal from their employers. OK, some folks keep up appearances and are still really close to bone, but darn!

And then there was the Class B office building I rented space from in the 1990s that installed locking toilet paper dispensers that only dispensed a single sheet at a time. I would pick the lock with my pocket knife, pull the roll from the dispenser, use what was needed, and leave the roll on top of the dispenser for the next patron.

220 Volt Light Bulbs are available.

They would require different wiring, an likely different fixtures to meet codes.

Probably only practical for initial installation when building new.

I have heard the platform lighting for the Chicago El uses the same high voltage as the rails. (Unverified)

The strip the car thing was going on when I moved to NYC in 1971. They used metal milk crates to prop up the car as they stripped it. I sold my car soon after I moved to NYC.

I think the petty theft is partly due to the idea that lots of people are richer than they are so they're just evening things out. Also, many people are so anxious to look prosperous they load up on debt and can't afford TP.

The true crime writer Edna Buchanan once wrote that the worst thieves she saw were "senior citizens" in Miami who didn't think twice about cleaning out public restrooms of towels and toilet paper. No doubt they have a sense of entitlement.

People with good paying jobs stealing from their employers ? They're usually called "bosses" or "executives."
