Just traded a friend who lives in Idaho a Colt Series 70 MkIV Government .38 Super for his 586-4, 6" round butt revolver. There is a sticker on the blue box that is dated to 1995; no infernal lock! My friend is the original owner and stated he put it on a shelf and never shot it. I have no reason or contrary evidence to doubt him. Some better pictures over the weekend. The -4 came from the factory with the Hogues; I actually have some Hogues with silver metal S&W Medallions. I like the Hogues for shooting, but nothing (other then ivory) beats wood stocks with blue steel! Now to find some real combat stocks!

Congratulations. Awesome find. Just so you know, some think the series 70 is a great find as well and your friend is probably in his Colt group saying what a great guy you were to trade your 1911 for a revolver.
I'll bet you will like the black grips. Black on black is nice. If you can get a set of Kings wood grips from Hogue, that would be a sweet set up, not cheap but very beautiful grips.

Nice Smith, Chief! Did you get the box and docs, or just the gun? I thought those came with wood grips? My 586 from that era has the wood combats. The 586 is a great gun/shooter. Where it's not been shot, do you plan on shooting it?

And I agree with Mongo, the Colt MK IV, 70s Series are very desirable, and the Colt .38 Supers are extremely hot right now. The combo is a very pricey option these days.

At the end of the day, it's all about what YOU want, and you got an excellent Smith, congratulations!

That is a very nice find.

I bought one used about 15 years or so ago. I found it at a LGS in the used case. IIRC, it was $375 with no box or paperwork. I had a 686 that is a tremendously accurate pistol. In fact I shot a lot of bullseye matches with that gun and because of it's accuracy I decided to get the 586. Both of mine are with 6" barrels. I am pretty sure the 586 had never been shoot. It too is a -4 variant.

Nice looking gun and you will love shooting it. I have quite a few 586's and a couple of 686's. My S&W accumulating started with an 8 3/8's 586 no dash I bought to deer hunt with many, many, years ago. I think I gave 275 for it. A friend bought it then they had the recall and he wanted off it. I love that gun and it is a tack driver.

As far as the value of the trade, as long as you are happy then it really isn't even an issue.

Again, nice gun that you are going to love.

For now when I do shoot it I will shoot .38 Special. I have developed some sort of nasty reaction to recoil. My hands swell up like "Mickey Mouse Cartoon" hands with deep bruising.

Two of four times shooting this has happened; the last time after shooting 15 rounds of 6.5 Creedmore out of my Ruger Precision Rifle. The first time it was shooting .44, .41, and .357 Magnum Revolvers. (Ruger Alaska, S&W Models 57 and 58 both 4" barrels, and a Model 19j

It may be related to a blood thinner I'm on or my Doctor thinks some sort of Auto-immune problem. It goes away after a few days but is a hot mess.

Take a look:

I call it a good trade. I would've made it too, as I have zero interest in .38 Super. I trade some with my closest friend. Dollar value never enters into the conversation.

You got a great revolver.

Dan
