Think I’m gonna get a 640

...Note I had a red insert put on the 640s front sight and it has Secret Service grips.

I've done that with almost every revolver I've owned in the last twenty-plus years, but I use blaze orange inserts. It makes a big difference.

I don't worry about resale value. I've always bought guns to shoot, mostly in good to excellent used condition.

Big fan of the 640. On the hip, the weight is not an issue. For times when I am wearing gym shorts and T-Shirt going on a run or walks, the 340 PD shines.

640, K6S, SP101, Ruger Speed Six, all are about the same size and any would work; pick the one you feel best with.

Couple of years ago a big lot of slightly used M640's came on the market and they were all the rage here on the forum. $319, IIRC.
I got sucked in and got one. Had been Michigan State Police BUG's, and like most LE guns, carried alot, shot little.
Cleaned mine up, spent time shooting it, carry it ALOT now. Great guns - you should've gotten one or two.

Lately I've been thinking of changing my carry gun. From a 686 to a 640. My backs been getting worse so probably time to lighten up a bit. Any suggestions on something other than a 640. I don't think I'd like an air weight magnum. I want 357 with fixed sights. Probably a 2 inch. Pros ? Cons? Can't you get new one without a lock?
I have always felt the the Smith and Wesson Centennial model was the best choice for purse or pocket carry.

When carrying in an ankle rig or belt holster my preference would be for a Chiefs Special Target or even just a Chief's Special

I always carry the heaviest J-frame that I can. Obviously baggy shorts and a T-shirt calls for an Aluminium or Scandium famed model, while a suit or jacket can easily conceal a holstered steel framed firearm

I got one of those from Centerfire. Drove over to Versailles to pick it up. Great gun!! Shoulda bought one sooner!

Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine....

Just as this tread is talking about the 640... today I saw one. Original in .38 spl. Perfect condition. $475, tax incl.

Yes I got it. Picts later.

Yep. I'm going to order a 640 pro in a few days. Just makes sense.

It's your money, so if it checks all your boxes, doesn't come with any substantial perceived drawbacks and makes sense to you, that's all that matters.

I see it differently...

There are pros and cons to moon clips, but the negatives outweight the benefits. They are fragile and potentially compromise reliabilty for no good reason which is unacceptable to me in a defense weapon.

You do have the option of not using them in the 640 pro, but reliabilty is still potentially compromised.

Some people like night sights. I don't and find them to actually be a liability.

So, if I were to buy a 640 pro, I'm paying more money for an added liability I don't want and a potentially less reliable gun.

That just doesn't make much sense to me.

Like many of the other forum members who responded to your message... I also like the S&W 640. Attached is an image of my two. The lower revolver is a 640 (CEN prefix & marked Tested +P+) that I carry in an ankle holster or a Mika pocket holster. The revolver shown above the 640 is my 640-1 that was returned to the S&W Pro shop to have a XS "Big Dot" sight mounted and all of the sharp edges melted. I normally carry this revolver in belt holster.

I love my Model 640 although I have to say it is not an easy gun to shoot well. My late production Detective Special is much easier to shoot. That being said, the stainless construction and concealed hammer of the Model 640 makes it an ideal pocket gun. I just need some more range time with it. I am not sure that there is much of an advantage to the newer Model 640's that are chambered for .357 Magnum. I'll bet they are not much fun to shoot and not that much more effective than a .38 FBI load like the standard pressure Buffalo Bore 158 gr. LSWCHP which is a handful in itself.
It is pictured here with some of my small hoard of the old Federal Nyclad FBI loads which are quite controllable in snubbies and shoot right to point of aim at 7 yards.

This is the easiest carry gun that I have found with 5 shots of 357 (or 38) very effective at short range. Shooting 357 takes practice, but 38 is reasonable recoil out of the box.

My 640-1 goes everywhere in a IHL pocket holster. Have a 642-1 lightweight .38 too, but I prefer the 640-1. The Model 13-2 in the photo is my "trout gun", because those wily Browns will sneak up on ya sometimes.
