thinking about a back up

I have the M&P 9 full size and compact. Have a permit, carry the 9c and use the full size mostly for fun at the range. They are both 100% reliable without a malfunction of any kind. I am thinking of a backup platform to have on my person or in my truck. Lots of thoughts on that mostly trending toward a revolver. This is a plan B in case the M&P 9c would fail...not that I ever anticipate that happening! I am not interested in a 380. The bodyguard 38 might be an option but I have seen too many reports of problems. Is a revolver the best answer or is there something I am overlooking??? Any responses are appreciated.

I carry a j frame in a jacket pocket which can quickly become the primary. I know it will function if I have to shoot through the pocket. Warmer weather I pocket carry a j frame or Kahr CM9.

Primary carry is a 1911 or M&P 9 compact.

I think it's just personal preference.

It's all preference. Today's M&P's are just as reliable as any revolver IMO.

That said my truck gun is a gun is a cheap gun I wouldn't cry over too much if it got stolen or was taken in an investigation.

You cannot beat a J for back-up. I carried a Model 38 in the back pocket of my uniform trousers during my 30 yr. career.

IMO, if you change the ammo in a J frame occasionally, it will be as close to 100% reliable as possible. I carry a Kel Tec PF-9 which is 9mm and has 7+1 rounds (compared to 5 in the J frame). Small autos are all very subject to "limp wristing". That is if you let your hand absorb some of the recoil energy the gun will fail to eject or fail to feed.

You are trading a few rounds for increased reliability. It is a personal choice.
