This is a warning to anyone that shops at Dick's Sporting Goods in Illinois.

I visited the local Dick's on Saturday and saw that they had 22LR in stock. Picked up 3 boxes and went to pay for them. Like normal they asked me for my Firearms Owner Identification Card (FOID). The cashier then entered the complete card ID into the register database. I had him call the manager, the woman that showed up confirmed that a "government agency" has asked them to keep the information. I asked which agency and she refused to answer. I called their customer service number on Tuesday and they also refused to say which agency. If come from out of state they will track your driver's license number.

Normally I would not care I do not have anything to hide but with all the issues with retailers having security breaches I do not want some felon finding out I own guns and visiting my house. If you think your information is safe just remember HomeDepot had a major breach this weekend.

Please spread the word to other sport forums. Dick's may have good intentions but the road to Hell is still out there.

I haven't lived in the Peoples Republik of Illinois in 20 years but I remember when they used to manually log every ammo purchase.
The legislature finally did away with this after reaching the conclusion this was worthless.
I would contact my legislator and find out on who's authority this is beong done.

I have been avoiding Dick's (appropriate name eh?) for quite awhile
as the ones here in the socialist utopia of Dane county are handgun haters
and generally unfriendly when you mention shooting sports.
Plenty of other places to shop.
Besides their prices for some items, say an ankle brace, are higher than elsewhere.

I'm betting things change @ Dick's if you start a boycott on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. (but that's just me)

If Dick's is collecting such private information you should at least have the right to know who authorized it. As of right now we are still in America, even if just barely.

From info gathered on the internet, it appears to be company policy that has recently been innovated. They claim it is to verify the sales clerk did check your FOID to see it was you! They say that they do not keep records of the ammo transaction and it does not leave the store!
I'm dubious.

Don't live in IL. And don't shop at DICKs here in TX.
Don't have to have any FOID or any other ID to buy ammo either. Don't even have to show ID it's obvious I'm over 18/21 the only requirement in TX to purchase rifle/pistol ammo.

As an Illinois resident, if you wish to be a gun owner or ammo purchaser, you must apply for a Firearm Owner Identification Card which looks sort of like a Driver's license. You fill out a form which is similar to a 4473 and wait 30-90 days for the card. It costs $10 and is good for 10 years. It is required to own guns, purchase guns and purchase ammo. There is a waiting period on all gun purchases and the law requires a "phone in" on all gun purchases including private sales. The FOID card has been a requirement since, I believe, the late 1960's.

WOW..............

I don't mind the insta-check here in Pa. but......these FOICs ....WOW

(.......................Speechless....................................)

Well as long as it's keeping Chicago's streets safe..... what the heck!

I buy at Dicks in NJ no records kept except the FPP about 6 months ago if I bought 22's they would ask if it was for a handgun or rifle if you said rifle no card needed pistol yes now its any 22. All rifle ammo is exempt from needing a FPP to purchase

It certainly is. About everything we see that has to do with the electronic storage of records seems to be heading down it. Too many dumb people doing dumb things that they have no idea of what the future ramifications may be. They do it because it is easy (for them).

In many cases, technology - and the access to it - has outpaced common sense.

This is sad. Anyone remember when you didn't have to show any sort of i.d. or paperwork to buy ammo?

But yes, I've had problems with some of the personnel at the appropriately-named Dick's before. I'm genuinely not sure if any of them work there full time or not. They just don't seem to be familiar with the products they sell...unless maybe it's t-shirts, sweatpants or some other generic product.

Yes, and I remember it ended in 1968. I remember the Federal regulation that classified all .22LR ammo as handgun ammo and required ID to purchase. I remember a lot of 60s liberal feel-good, do-nothing laws and regs being eliminated in 1986 with Volkmer-McClure, only to be replaced with new "progressive" feel-good, do-nothing laws and regs.

Eternal vigilance, or something like that...

GOTTA LOVE IDIOTIC FORM QUESTIONS

Especially the purchase forms where it's the honor system to tell the truth, cuz we all know criminals & drug users never lie.

Right if it's on the internet someone can access it. Just ask the CIA.

I generally avoid "big box" sporting goods stores. I find the prices a bit high and the actual interest in shooting sports limited. I've visited the Dicks and Scheels in Springfield but only bought accessories. I tend to avoid places that have invasive policies like those spoken of here.

so does this mean that if for some really strange reason that I'm driving through Illinois as a non-resident and not having a foid card that I can't buy any ammo at all?

Good Intentions?

Hitler and Stalin had "Good Intentions" too.
Illinois and NJ need a lot of cleaning up and firearms don't have a thing to do with it.

Wow, not long ago I bought 150 rounds of 9mm and a 60 pack box of cigars from Wally World, and the clerk never asked for any ID. I always get a kick out of people saying the rural states are backwards, but after looking at the "forward" moving states, and the regulations on everything under the sun, I severely question their logic.
