I can do it all with my Super Blackhawk 44 magnum. I just wouldn't want any pistol cartridge bigger than that. I have a 45-70 Marlin if I need something bigger.
Those of you that have the .500: what do you use it for?

I have a 500 and a 460. WOW! They do get everyones attention.
Mine are range toys. Recoil actually isn't that bad, but nothing I would want to do all day. The arthritic thumbs do act up afterwards.

1000 FPS with a 250 grain bullet is just about perfection, in either 44 mag or 45 Colt.
I have a 7.5" one.
Shot one deer with it.
Other then that just target shooting.
It has less recoil then my M29-2......

Honestly, my 500 is pretty much a paperweight, as is my 460. Great guns I guess but frankly just too heavy to be practical for me any more. Lately, if it weighs more than my 696 it only goes to the range and stays home most of the time. Enjoy.

That goes for me and my 500. I bought a set of Lee dies and some brass for about what a box "Factory" ammo sells for.
I've got the 8 3/8" variety. Thing is VERY accurate & has a lighter and smoother trigger than anticipated. I load and shoot 350 gr Berry's bullets in mine most of the time on targets. I do, however, carry some Corbons in case mister macho shows up and wants to shoot it. The difference between the loads is not usually revealed to the pigeon.. er the guy that wants to try it. The record is held by a glutton for punishment that managed to crack off 3 before handing it back. I guess the reason for having it, other than a neat toy, is the entertainment value. Like the other owners I have purchased a lot of ammo with 2-5 empties in the box. I do agree that the recoil is not as sharp as a .44mag which I attribute to the additional weight of the gun.YMMV

Originally bought for a fun gun to blow stuff up with at the range. After shooting it a lot and getting used to the power, I realized it would be a great gun for deer hunting. Not much different than a 50 caliber muzzleloader that is used by many for deer hunting. I have yet to shoot a deer with mine, but I hope to change that soon. Mine is most accurate with Federal Barnes Expander bullets. 275 grain is is easy to manage with such a heavy gun. It's not as punishing to shoot as a lot of people make it seem, at least with the heavy guns and lighter loads. But shorter barrels with heavy bullets is a different story!
The 500's recoil isn't that bad. I don't think it is any worse than a light model 29/629. It doesn't sting near as much as my 325 did with wood grips.
Now mine is a 8 3/8 with a scope so it is heavy and that helps and I mostly shoot 350 grain bullets. I am sure one of the short ones is snappier and probably brutal with the ridiculously heavy bullets like the 700 gr slug you can fire. But, hey, a 3" 629 with 300gr slugs would be no picnic on the palm and wrist.
Take any descent round, rifle, shotgun or hand gun. Fire the heaviest load available in a gun with a stock that doesn't fit or in a real light model that fires it and its gonna sting.

I have an 8 3/8 that I mounted a scope on. I got it because it was something new to play with. Lately I have been experimenting with Hornady 300 grain FTX with H110. They are deadly accurate. I will admit that I like it when I pull up to the 100 yard range next to all the tacticool AR guys. I get some looks for sure. Then they see how it shoots and I REALLY get some looks. It amazes me how many people are afraid of it. I usually offer to let people try it but very few take me up on it. Make no mistake, the laws of physics really do apply and the gun kicks but its not that bad and it is certainly not uncontrollable. My model 360, 357 is way more uncomfortable to shoot than the X frame. I look at those YouTube videos and it makes me realize that not everyone should be allowed to handle guns.
