It depends and that is the beauty of the Shield.
When the gun is on my body, either hip, pocket, or shoulder rig, I carry with the safty off usually because its in a holster. If I am pocket carrying it out of a holster, I keep the safty on.
When the gun is by the bedside or in the car or in any resting position off my body, I put the safty on. I have kids and try to take every precaution even though the gun is put up.
I always sweep the safty off when I draw the gun so even though it is off, I sweep it down as you would with a 1911. The Shield is a very versatile gun the way S&W designed the safty to not be intrusive but still be accesable.

Round chambered, safety ON. Train for it and clicking off the safety is automatic if you ever need to use the Shield for self defense.

Like other have said .Shield 9 with me all the time On my body 1 in the tube no safety.On the bed stand or i am crawling around on a dozer or loader i might put it on. Holster covers and is indented into safety.
I think its what your comfortable with.If your new to pistols maybe use the safety till the gun is part of you.......it will be part of you after a while

Just type in "actual police shootings". or "shootings" etc.

Here is one… but I'm warning you it's very disturbing. After watching the video, ask yourself if you could remember or have time to take the safety off. There are many videos like this. The other reason I carry AIWB for speed.

Carry not only with a round chambered, but with the safety off? I know I know, this has probably been beat to death, and I apologize, but I carry with a round chambered and am wondering how many others do the same with the safety off. Wondering how comfortable everyone is carrying with the safety off or not.

Round chambered, safety off for me. I'm used to the drill, having carried Glocks for years.
When I'm holstering the Shield into its IWB holster, I do flick the safety on for an added measure of safety. But once it's holstered, I flick the safety off.
I want my draw/shoot drill to be totally consistent.

Better to use a pocket holster. Keeps the gun oriented properly and keeps things out of the trigger guard.

I prefer a gun with a thumb safety so both my

Shield 9 and my Ruger SR40c are carried with a round
chambered and the safety on.

There is no reason not to keep a round chambered IMO.

I use the safety all the time , because it makes no sense

to use it one time for this situation and not use it for

another situation.

Received my Alien Gear holster this past Monday for my Shield and love it. Very comfortable. For the price you can't go wrong, and its very well made.

In answer to the OP's question, I do not and would not use the thumb safety. It is completely drop safe without it, and in a proper holster that covers the trigger guard, there is no need to worry about the trigger being pulled to the rear unintentionally. Obviously, if carried in the pocket, there should be ABSOLUTELY NOTHING else in the pocket (or compartment of a purse for that matter) where the Shield in its holster is carried.

At the Moment I have only pocket carried my shield in a pocket holster in my coat pocket with a round chambered and safety on. I practice turning the safety off as I pull it out of my pocket.

I debated the same thing and in the end I decided to run with the safety on and switching it off as I draw. Practice\habit is how I will hopefully respond should I become engaged in a fight for my life that most likely will involve tunnel vision. I also think it acts as one more small deterrent to anyone else should they manage to strip the weapon from me in a scuffle.
