I have no hard case for my 686 with 6" barrel. There are two available from the Smith and Wesson store. A large for over 6inch barrels and a small for up to 6 inch barrels.

I would like to hear from those who have these blue Smith hard cases , which is the better fit for a 686 revolver with a 6inch barrel. Since 6 inch is the break point is the large to much and or is the small case just right?

I have the same dilema. I went ahead and ordered the large case. I haven't recieved it yet but when I do, I'll let you know how it fits.

Here's a bump for you.

Can you simply ask S&W which they send with the 6 inch? Or, perhaps find one in a store and take measurements and ask S&W to measure them and send you the one that matches the measurements? Someone out there at 2100 Springfield Avenue has to know. :)

Same here. My new 686 Plus 6" came in the small case and it fits fine. I ordered a case for my other 686 4" and got the small and it too fits fine. Go with the small but be sure they are in stock before you order. Mine was back ordered. You may have better luck ordering the same case feom another dealer.

Here is the proof that the small case works for the 6":
