Absolutely true, but fortunately Howard Cosell is no longer with us.
I live in the heart of the SEC between Tuscaloosa and the Alabama Crimson Tide and Starkville, Ms and the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Oh, by the way, Ole Miss is just up the road in Oxford. Football has always been huge here and probably always will be. But the conference has changed and become too big. The same is happening in the Big 12 and Big 10 with the PAC 12 being the biggest loser. It has gotten to the point that it is all about the money and media. The developement of student athletes has become secondary. I hate it.

I get sports/leagues/conferences having to evolve...to a point.
The Big Eight morphing into the Big 12 makes sense.
The Pac 10 devolving bit by bit and now dissected to such an extent that it basically won't exist. And the Big 10 having what, 18 teams now? So much for regional rivalries and sport over money.

The ever growing greedy quest for the almighty dollar will eventually destroy all sports. It is manifesting in College Football now, and will slowly work it's way to all levels. I no longer watch much College, and No NFL, NBA, MLB, and very little NHL.

I am a much bigger college hoops fan where we can see more teams in pre and post season tourneys anyway. With Fb it's more just an odd preseason game and a bowl game barring playoffs.
So as a Badger hoops fan I'd be excited to see us play the west coast teams more frequently, while our Fb team will still have its main rivals ie MN. I'll still watch Badger Fb (esp this year with the new coach and system, will be curious there) but will really be looking forward to the new hoops schedules in the next couple years.
Speaking for big10 and pac12, I think it affects the west coast teams far more than the existing schools, not to mention the Rose Bowl suddenly loses its luster as a Bowl and potential Playoff game. But yeah it is all about the money.

At the rate they're going, the NCAA rules will become so loosened that we'll eventually see a player being able to play for different universities in the same season. Here's a future quote from top quarterback recruit, Melvin Cowznofski: "I think I had a pretty good freshman season overall. I threw five touchdowns for Michigan, four for Texas, and seven for Alabama, and my NIL money was amazing. Next season, I'm going to settle down a little. I'm only planning to play for Notre Dame and Georgia."

I agree the direction of college football could be bad. But one thing from the "Good Old Days" is that my favorite team was hardly ever televised. Now they are on some channel almost all the time.

Just waiting for the official announcement that four of the playoff slots will automatically go to the SEC and four automatically to the Big 10, leaving everybody else to fight over the last four. I actually hope OU and Texas fall flat on their face in the SEC, just like Nebraska's fabulous run in the Big 10 so far.

I think the SEC should have taken Clemson, Florida State anf Miami before Missouri, Texas and Oklahoma. Jury is still out on Arkansas.
SEC stands for SouthEAST Cunference.
Pac 10 dissolved because of the TV money-The West coast teams never got the exposure that the east got . Oregon and Washington going ot the big ten makes absolutely no sense whatsoever other than greater exposure in the Eastern markets.
SEC was barely workable at 14, 16 screws the pooch. Hate to see traditional rivalries go by the wayside not only for LSU but for all the other SEC teams.

A friends brother played College Football on a full ride then 7 years as an NFL lineman. He says that full ride scholarship was worth about 10 cents and hour. I tend to watch football if I know one of the players, ignore it if I don't.

Money, greed and the love of money is leading to the downfall of college football. I live in the heart of Dixie, where everyone is a fan of some team in the SEC. And we wear out sports shirts and caps all year round. War Eagle here, surrounded by Bama fans and Tennessee fans mostly. I have to agree the Cajunlawyer, the SEC need Clemson, Florida State and Miami if they wanted to expand, we are the SEC home of the Confederated States of America, true rebels to the end.

College football at the Division 1 level is now just a minor league for the NFL. The teams are owned by the schools. Does anyone really think that the players are "student athletes"? They are now paid to play.

I attended the Princeton-Lehigh game at Princeton last September, the stadium was at best 20% full. Rutgers has tried to turn itself into a sports power and build up its alumni association-neither with any real success. Students complain constantly that tuition goes up every year and strains their budgets, that the players are pampered and coddled. And the games are poorly attended.
Hershal's retired, man, get over it.
I LOVE college football, but money is killing it! A conference should be made up of regional teams so that fans can drive to games. The cross country travel may work for football, but the Olympic sports will suffer. NIL and the transfer portal are also ruining college sports. I remember when players hated the other team, and lived and breathed their team. Now, most players, not ALL thankfully, have their hand out, and will change to their rival for the right amount of money.
