Thoughts on the Beretta 92?

I've owned a couple Beretta pistols and for some stupid reason have sold them all. One of my favorite full size handguns of all time. I'd be hard pressed to chose between a 92fs or a 3rd gen S&W. Planning on buying a 92g soon.

My first gun was a Beretta 92FS. I bought it about 20 years ago and not for too much less than the price you listed. I loved it. It's the only gun I've ever owned that's never malfunctioned, even when I fed it bottom-barrel commercially reloaded ammo. Did my best shooting with it despite it being rather large for my hands.

It's the only gun with a slide-mounted safety I would consider owning. Unless Beretta changed the design the lever is spring-loaded. I found if I flagged my thumb high I could sweep the safety off with the same motion as I would with a 1911. I also found it easy to de-cock and off-safe with my thumb.

It is on the large side for concealed carry, but I know it can be done with the right gear and clothing. It wouldn't be my first choice, though.

But I would echo the advice of those who said to at least handle it first. If possible, see if you can rent one at a range and try it out.

The 92fs is the only 9mm I own. Love it.

Sadly, most events I shoot have to make a power factor so I mostly shoot 45s.

Just bought an M9. Great gun. Been in service for years. If you get one, don't forget to get your free gear.

Try the beretta 92fs compact. It's a more normal size gun, reduced reach to the trigger, and has all the benefits of its larger counterpart. 13 round mags, but the larger mags fit too. I had one and carried it with Mec Gar 20 round mags.

Great gun.

They are reliable and fairly accurate for a service gun. It is easy to get mags and parts because of the proliferation of govt guns out there. If you think you like it you probably will. Be John McClean.

I see them on the used market often. $500 seems to be the current fair market price for a clean one.

Hello all:

I am thinking, either of trading or buying out right, the Beretta 92s(?). It is a 9mm for your information. I would like to take up shooting the 9mm round to see what and how it does. But I do not want a micro-anything, I have a Taurus 738 380 acp and it is quite snappy and no range gun at all.

Do any of your own one?

Is it worth $599 new?

How is the Baretta warranty?

I would think about trading a Smith Model 360PD Scandium / Titanium 357 for it. May have "to give some boot."

Please don't flame me for this possible choice, but I would like some helpful and considerate feedback if at all possible.

My thoughts! :D

Yours?

I have owned My Beretta Model 92FS ( Made in Italy) Since around 1988 I likely only have 2500 or so Rounds through it (I just don't get to shoot much) It is Totaly Reliable & has never had a issue with any ammo no matter what My HK USP is much more ammo sensitive,I have 100% faith in That Model 92 & wouldn't hesitate to recomend it,I have never had any reason for Beretta Warranty Service So I can't Comment There,$599 seens about a norm in price now days.

If your ok with a police trade in Classic Firearms has some 92s for $299. You have to pay shipping and FFL transfer fees but it's still a pretty good deal.

I have owned a 92F, two 92FS's, and my current Italian made 92 FS Inox. A former LEO evidence gun, it cost me $300.00 plus tax in 2011.

As mentioned above, this is a large pistol if you want to conceal it. A Galco Combat Master 202 holster works well for me. My four guns have all shot well and functioned flawlessly. They are, however, not for everybody. If the grip does not suit you try a BHP, Glock 19, or a Sig P228.

REALLY dislike the slide-mounted safety.
While working at a LGS, I picked up a used SS Taurus PT92 for the princely sum of $200. It was intended to be a truck gun.

Appreciated the frame-mounted safety, but held reservations on the gun, not being a Taurus fan-boy. It came with Pachmayrs on it. Yes, they made it wide, but also helped secure it between my truck seats.

Ran a very large assortment of ammo through it, everything from 90 gr. handloads to 147 gr. stuff and everything in between, including lots of +P stuff.. Shot particularly well with some LE contract Win. 127 gr. +P+.
It ended up doing stand-in duty as a loaner for several dozen CC classes I taught.
Nary ever a problem.
So, still not a Taurus fan-boy, but considering my experience and extreme dislike of the Beretta slide-mounted safety, that's the direction I'd go again.
I may be mistaken, but I believe Beretta did field some variation of the M92 with frame mounted safeties. Now, if I ran across one of those, I'd grab it.
Good luck.

One of the best autos this side of my sig. P220. I've owned several over the years and currently own a m96 and the cougar 9mm. Berettas are great guns.

Rhetorician Response

The 92 has quite a large grip - you should try one out before deciding to get one.

A used 360PD in very good condition is actually worth slightly more than the cost of a new 92. Is your 360PD a "lock" model, or a "no lock" model?

Locked model.

I have been looking for a killer deal on a 92FS for a couple years, I recently ran across this gem at a gun show, guy was asking $425 picked it up for $350 . Included two Hi cap mags and an extra set of Hogue grips. Shoots fantastic, eats any ammo I feed it. It was worth the wait

I have two Beretta Centurions, a 92D (9mm, Double-Action-Only) and a 96D (.40 S&W, also DAO). (The Centurion is shorter than the full-size models.)

Yes, they are big and hand-filling. They are also extremely well-made, accurate, and 100% reliable. I especially like the DAO configuration, with its long, smooth, consistent trigger pull, and no safety.

I don't think you can go wrong with one of these... :)

I have three, a std. model, a Centurion and a DA only Centurion that
was made in Italy. Great pistols. Don't waste your money on a Taurus.
