Thread adapter m&p22

Hey guys so I just got my m&p 22 thread adapter. My question is after you remove the barrel nut, do you keep the sleeve on or do you remove it to add a thread adapter? I bought a silencer co p22 adapter, which is said to work the same. No one really mentions to keep the sleeve on or not. Thanks Ron
