I was looking for a "shooter grade" 4" S&W model 28-2 for a little while and I came across this one while doing an internet search. Although I experienced "internet jitters" purchasing from a private seller on the other side of the country, he eased my mind a little when he called and we talked a bit. Anyway, the gun arrived today and here it is. The box is original to the model and era but not to this particular gun. It also has all the original paperwork and oiled packing paper. The grips are numbered to the gun, has the slightest of turn lines on the cylinder, and is in extremely good mechanical order. Now I can go out and hammer away without the worry of beating up my 27s!

Nice Model 28! Early N serial number?

I'd put that one away and continue shooting the 27s.:)

I don't know what the correct term is for the "&" between Smith and Wesson, but I was told this is a "little different" variation?

Nice.

I picked one up last month from the Mid 70's in like condition with box and papers.

It's a great shooter.

Excellent!

You need not be afraid of buying on the internet, most people are interested ins ellign their "stuff" not ripping you off.

But...one must be careful. Read the feedback (more is better than less). Ask questions before bidding. Haunt the internet and you will see quite a few of the same sellers who sell well and honest. More pictures the better and ask for more if necessary.

On true collectibles it is probably best to see them before a purchase (as in hand). If not ask for an inspection period.

I picked up one like that a few years back. Can't make myself fire it...dumb, I know. Had and sold two before that in my ignorant youth, so do know how they shoot. I just love the looks quality, and solidity of those big bruisers, I guess.

I was in the same boat. Thought it too new and pretty to shoot. I decided just to shoot mine. Glad I did. There seems to be more of these like new 28's out there than we realize.

If I can't shoot and enjoy mine, what's the point of me owning it.

I was in the local gun store looking around and a guy came in and traded this for a Taurus Judge:

New in the box, unfired, all the paperwork, five digit N serial number, 1970 28-2. I was on it as soon as the happy new Judge owner walked out the door. I debated 24 hours over whether to shoot it or not. Its been shot a bunch now. After all, they've already shot it at the factory.......

I was lucky and found this 28-2 unfired with box and goodies at a local gun show. It was listed for $600 OTD. After some haggling I got it for $500 OTD. I think I stole it.

I really like the M28-2, 4" I have. It has become my favorite shooter. I have the original magnas, but they are hardly ever on it. I liked these stocks and have kept them on it.

Howdy Reb. Congrats on a beautiful 28-2! I also have a 4" 28-2, but mine has a 6-digit N-prefix. Not sure when it was made (N543XXX). I am looking for some period correct grips for it, as I got it with a Pachmyer "gripper" on it.

Great shooters. I am sure you will enjoy yours for years to come. Good luck with it!
