[/IMG][/URL]I just bought this 3" Talo, took it to the range and lost a big ol chunk of thumb meat on the first six rounds. Never happened on my .44 6 1/2" or even on my 500 w/ wood grips. What did I do different?

The same thing happened to me when I shot my 3" 629. It is from the crappy plywood "fish scale" grips. They are a very poor design; in my ever so humble opinion, the worst ever put on a S&W revolver. They are the only grips ever to tear flesh off my thumb.
I put on a set of Ahrends Retro Combat round to square conversions. Problem solved.

It was the inside of my thumb close to the web. The wood barely sticks out beyond the back strap in that spot. I wouldn't have thought it was enough to take skin off.

Handsome revolver, but those don't really look like the best-designed stocks for a heavy or even moderate kicker. I hope the replacement wood solves your problem.
I don't use shooting gloves, but I usually have a few wide band-aids in my range bag to pad the lower length of my thumb if I sense I'm going to get damage from a particular set of stocks. Fortunately (or not) my thumb knuckle is so callused that a steel-to-skin sideswipe is likelier to damage the gun's cylinder release than my thumb.

I don't use shooting gloves, but I usually have a few wide band-aids in my range bag to pad the lower length of my thumb if I sense I'm going to get damage from a particular set of stocks. Wow! That's what I call tough hands!! The company I work for made wearing gloves mandatory so in the meantime, my hands get soft. 
I did have a glove in my ammo box and was able to pop off another 72 rounds before I gave it up.

Many thanks for you kind 'like' of my post on another thread! I just purchased a 3" Talo 686 Plus. I immediately pulled the 'beautiful' wood grips with their ridiculous reinforcing (?) bolts and put on a pair of Pach RB Compacs. I shoot with a glove as I have scar tissue in the web of my shooting hand.
Better, but very far from good. The R-P 158gr .357 SWC, which I can fire with reasonable ease in my Model 60 (go figure), was an absolute beast in the 686. When I arrived home, I tried on a pair of UM SB rubber finger grooves, and the gun felt more comfortable. I have shot other 686s with the same results. For me the RB in L and N frames with Mag loads makes shooting more difficult.
I wonder how many fellow posters find the SB configuration to be more comfortable when firing Magnum revolvers.

kaaskop49, It seems like I'd read somewhere that the Talo grips were hand slicers but of course I figured "not me!". I have Pachs on the first revolver I ever purchased, a Rossi 720 .44 spl and never cared for them. I ordered 2 pair of grips from jaruwan.p on ebay so I'll get to try those out soon.
