The thumb safety on the model 41 doesn't seem to prevent a round from being fired, but simply prevents the slide from cycling. In other words, if I chamber a round, and then engage the thumb safety, I am still able to fire the round by pulling the trigger. Can anyone explain why S&W decided to put a safety on this model at all?

Thanks in advance.

The safety should disengage or block the trigger if it is fully engaged in the upward position. Recommend you have a gunsmith or the factory look at it.

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly! I will do as you recommend.

Welcome to the forum.
Alan is correct, have it serviced.
The manual safety should lock the slide, block the sear and disconnect the trigger bar. Something is obviously wrong with your gun.
