I was looking for the same thing. I found a thread on the subject. I haven read all the way through it yet. I too would like a thumb safety on my M&P 9. I bought the Carry and Range kit today. Its doesnt come with the thumb safety.

You can't retro fit an M&P that doesn't have a thumb safety to have one. The two models use different sear assemblies. Don't worry though, there are plenty of safeties in place that will keep your M&P from going off until you want it to.

This is why I didn't buy my own M&P9 in a range kit. I ordered it with thumb safety and without mag safety instead.
