Time for a new scope

OK guys so I'm looking at getting a new scope for my M&P 10 and I'm looking for some input. I have narrowed it down to two choices a Leupold VX II 2-7 and a Nikon Monarch 2-8.

I already have the same VX II on my 45-70 guide gun and am very impressed by it, impressed enough to consider getting another one for my M&P 10.

However I consider myself a Nikon guy owning 5 of them already 2 buckmasters, 2 monarchs, and a prostaff.

The monarch is $50 cheaper and I know the clarity will be top notch however I am concerned that the recoil will beat the tar out of the Nikon and not be able to get it replaced for free like I know leupold would. But I believe the monarch will have slightly better clarity.

I currently have a prostaff 2-7 shotgun scope on it now it has been just fine (just like it was on my FAL). But being the optics snob that I am, it looks a tad bit cloudy and kind of bothers me.

Opinions???

Purely hunting rifle? No need to dial for windage/elevation? Sounds to me like you should just to with the Prostaff.

It's carbine so that's why I'm staying in the 2-8 range. If I need windage or elevation I'll be using one of my bolt actions.

In terms of the M-308 I'm really not a fan of the BDC reticles. Way to busy and if you try to apply it to the real world completely impractical. I remember back before I was reloading I had a monarch with the BDC and went to Nikon's website to do the calculation of the yardage of the factory ammo I was using. Long story short I found out that the bottom circle was the 1000 yardd circle. When I looked through the scope at 1000 yards a entire barn fit into the bottom circle, which provokes the joke of you can hit the broad side of a barn at 1000 yards with the bdc but who know where. Circles were the worst idea ever for a reticle, how do you know where the bullet is going in the circle? Way to "Tacticool" of an idea.

Roger, i have never made a 1000 yd shot or looked at barn through the scope. M-308 likely does not fit your needs. best wishes on your search

I can understand wanting a 2-8 power scope, just don't forget that rifle can out shoot your scope and you might want to step up to a 2.5-10. If your shot's will be inside of 500 yards, then I see no issues with the 2-8. As for recoil, don't worry about it at all. Nikon's are built tough and backed by one of the industries best warranties. A shame you don;t like the BDC reticle, I have shot target's to 627 yards impacting 10 inch steel plates without a problem. Then again, you have choices and the Nikoplex sounds like it is what you are looking for. You can still use Spot On for turning knobs to make accurate long range shots. I have used Nikon's M-223 2-8 both BDC and Rapid Action Turret a lot. Built on the MONARCH platform it is tough to beat for quality and price. I have M-308 4-16's on my AR .308's for hunting. A lot larger profile then what you are looking to have, but they sure make shot's to 500+ yards a lot easier.

The M-308 scope comes with a 1 piece M-308 Mount. It has 20 MOA built into it for long range shooting. $100 you don't have to spend on an extra mount.

You will be an instant fan. The 4-16 gives you all the magnification you could want. I usually hunt with mine on 6 and rarely turn it past 12. Make sure you check out Spot On and realize that if you shoot with the magnification on 12, the numbers will be different for the BDC reticle. Enjoy and I look forward to seeing pics.
