Anybody know the time line for a USMC recruit. Someone told me that a young man who worked for me for a few months this summer is leaving for Iraq tomorrow. It surprised me because when I saw him last (end of August) he was going to go back to school (adult education) to get a high school diploma. I thought that was odd too, I did not know you could not get in with a GED. So the plan was, get the diploma by the first of the year, join the Marines.
His only work skills were, hard worker, easy to talk to. He had no father and lived with his alcoholic, mean, mother and her sister that I never met. He slept in our basement a few times, after asking if I cared if he slept in the garage! Not wanting to go home reminded me of me. I joined at 17 and got my GED 15 years later.
I lost contact with him after the summer work ran out. Is it possible to go thru basic, infantry training, and be deployed that fast? What about the diploma? This seems faster than during the 70s going to Viet Nam.
We talked about the military a lot and went to the range a few times, wish I could have wished him good luck.
