Anybody know the time line for a USMC recruit. Someone told me that a young man who worked for me for a few months this summer is leaving for Iraq tomorrow. It surprised me because when I saw him last (end of August) he was going to go back to school (adult education) to get a high school diploma. I thought that was odd too, I did not know you could not get in with a GED. So the plan was, get the diploma by the first of the year, join the Marines.

His only work skills were, hard worker, easy to talk to. He had no father and lived with his alcoholic, mean, mother and her sister that I never met. He slept in our basement a few times, after asking if I cared if he slept in the garage! Not wanting to go home reminded me of me. I joined at 17 and got my GED 15 years later.

I lost contact with him after the summer work ran out. Is it possible to go thru basic, infantry training, and be deployed that fast? What about the diploma? This seems faster than during the 70s going to Viet Nam.
We talked about the military a lot and went to the range a few times, wish I could have wished him good luck.

He sounds like a good kid, I wish him well.

When I went through boot camp and infantry training I started at the end of August as well. As I recall I was done just after the holidays.

Boot Camp is 12 weeks, depending on his mos he could take additional infantry training (ITS), or go straight to his first duty station.
GED is fine for enlistment, he can further his education as his free time dictates, again, his mos will determine free time as well.

When I was in the Army 1967-1971, it was 8 weeks for BCT, 8 weeks for Advanced Infantry Training and you were deemed ready to go. Nowadays
grunts get only 12 weeks-that "OSUT" nonsense. The Marines used to have ITR-Infantry Training Regiment-which used to be mandatory for all Marines, not sure if they still do that.

As best I can remember, it was 12 wks basic, 4 wks ITR, 20 days boot-leave
and you're ready to apply your training.
If you ever get word on this fellow, please post.
His reasons seem to strike a chord, somehow....
I hope he comes back safely. TACC1

Hey, I like these posts and stories. I had a bunch of friends who were just adrift out of high school. Those who joined the Marines seem to have done well for themselves, except the one who got himself killed. If nothing else they got their life on track. I feel pretty sure it wouldn't have happened had they remained civilians and continued to hang out with others in the same situation. So yes, post back about the young man.

Basic in 1956 was 8 wks, with 8 wks advanced training or other specialized schooling (electronics, whatever) possible after that. Then you were ready to go. Well, maybe ready to go...

Went in August and by the following August was applying my trade in Vietnam.

The Marine Corps experience is all of what you make it. Some flourish and others don’t. My first year was rough. Made PFC twice but went out the door as a Sergeant at the end of my enlistment. They wanted me to stay but I’d seen enough. Good experience but some of that experience and memories I’d like to forget. None the less you’re changed.

My youngest is home right now, having graduated from Parris Island on 18 December. He had 10 days 'boot camp leave' and is a recruiter's assistant until 11 January, when MCT (Marine Combat Training) starts - that lasts 28 days. Then he flies directly to Ft. Sill, Oklahoma for 8 weeks of artillery training.
My oldest is just finishing up his 5th year in the Corps, gets out on 6 February. On the day his brother left for boot camp (21 Sept.) he had an incident with an IED and had his right foot broken in 3 places.
My father was a WWII Marine and I was in during (but did not serve in) Vietnam.
The tradition continues - as it should.
