Timing issue??? Help please!

I have a S&W Model 27 (was my fathers, dates to 1957 or 58) When shooting double action or manualy cocking it will stop and I have to help it finish it's rotation. Does not happen without bullets in cylinder and usually doesn't happen till I have fired a few. It has on occasion however happened before firing. Although it is an older hand gun I don't believe it was used much in the last 30+ years. Yes, I did clean it, but stop short of taking the cylinder out. Any thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I love shooting it. I don't know if my helping it finish rotating hurts it or not?

You will have to inspect the hand spring, It may have broke.
The FAQ will help you remove the side plate and then you will be able to remove and diagnose it further.

It just could be dirty/rusty underneth the cover. Did you detail clean all the parts ?

A fine old Model 27 from the fifties with that family connection deserves the best treatment IMHO! I would return it to the factory and let the experts iron out the problem and return it to perfect mechanical condition. After fifty+ years of service, it deserves first class treatment.

Thank you for your posts. I was torn between doing the checking myself or letting S&W go through it. I would love to take it apart, but I do believe it is due to be checked by proffessionals. Thanks again. I will let you know how it came out.

timing issue??

Well, I finally got a S&W gunsmith (retired) to look at my Model 27. This after S&W refusing to even look at it. Numerous other gunsmiths as well.

1. DeBurr Hammer and side plate.
2. Polished rebound slide.
3. Refit Ejecter Rod.
4. Corrected excessive end Play.

He was the father of a friend of mine. Bill came to $50

I hope to go out and shoot it on Monday or Tuesday.

Btw...reason on one wanted to work on it was it was manufactured in 1958. Having receiving this from my Dad who died in 2011 it is one of two prize posessions from my Dad, the other one being a Model 41 manuafactered in 1958 I believe. Took a few years (yes I move slowly) to get it checked. You have to be careful who you trust with something that could never be replaced.

Beware the GS that won't work on a 1950's Smith! They are still "basically" the same inside. The reason they don't want to work on older guns is that parts are a pain to get, but since there are relatively few parts and they are pretty robust, any GS who said I don't like working on 1950's Smith is a deal breaker in my eyes. Just saying..........

Find an old timer GS that loves the older Smiths and he'll do the right thing by you!

Let us know how it works. I'm not convinced that the work completed will fix the symtoms that you described. Hope I'm wrong. Won't be the first time.

Took it to the range this weekend. Shoots like a new gun. S&W were the only ones that refused to work on it. The guy who fixed it was a old S&W gunsmith. I am very happy.

The two other gunsmiths said they don't work on old S&W because parts were hard to find.
