Tin Star

I have a pound in the basement. Bought it from Powder Valley with some other supplies when they had inventory. Limited load data is in VV online manual listed as "32C" IIRC. It's bulky like Trail Boss, but it's a stick/log type powder. Still have almost a full pound, so can't really comment on performance.

Even though this powder is a little higher in price, I also wanted to try it out but it was too hard to find and I finally gave up.

Trail Boss is ok............
it would be nice to see them side by side, grain for grain etc....
but it is not going to happen with me.

Anybody seen or used this powder?
I can't find it anywhere.
Useing Trail Boss right now but would like to try TS in several revolvers.

I like Paul105 bought a pound with a Powder Valley order a while back. I have only used it in 38 special so far. It is bulky and clean burning. I was very happy with ES, SD and accuracy using Missouri 140 grain TCFP and 4.9 grains at 1.45 COL. It behaves very close to what Quickload indicates. The DEWC load I tried was not very impressive but the 158 gr LSWC was alright.
I would not go out of the way to buy this at a premium but if you come across it at a decent price give it a try.
Sorry I can't help you too much as I'm still in a learning curve with N32C.

I was just at Recob's (in Prairie Du Sac, Wi.) today and they have about
a dozen jars of Tin Star on the shelf.
They had other Viht. powders as well. It's been a long time.
I got some Accurate 1680 which I have been looking for for months.
The faster shotgun/handgun powders are still MIA.
Order online or call them.
Their website does not usually reflect their actual stock.
I am lucky enough to be able to wander in there once and awhile.

Thanks for the info.... :)

I have 5 lbs. obtained from Powder Valley a while back also. Use it in .38 .45 colt .41 "special" and .44 special. Also have a single canister of trail boss.
They are fairly similar products with TB being a little bulkier. In .38 I like 3.1g of N32C/tin star behind a Rem 148g HBWC. Gives 700fps and good accuracy. With these very light loads there is some unburned stuff but it is minor.

VV powders are one of the few available locally (except TS) and I have had good results with all the handgun powders used so far. The limited load data is a pain at times though.

Hmmm .. . never heard of Tin Star . . . . I learn something new everyday! Interesting thread and read . . . thank you fellas!

Now that Hodgdon, I believe, has assumed distributorship of Vihtavuori powder, I'm hoping supplies improve. I'd like to try the stuff myself in .45 Colt loads. Vihtavuori powder is a mite expensive, but my experience with it thus far has been pretty good. I've found only one shop in my general area within reasonable distance that stocks it, and not all varieties all the time. I'm too cheap to pay hazmat surcharges.

This is excellant powder with cast bullets. It gives me very low velocity spreads. I like it more than anyother non magnum powder. Powder is capable of velocities over 1000fps without high pressure signs.

I just purchase 4 lbs from these guys @ $16.00 per pound. It is now in route by UPS with tracking number.http://www.recobstargetshop.com/browse.cfm/2,169.html

Here is 25 yard target shot off sandbags with 686 using 4.7 gr Tin Star (N32C). Soft 16/1 alloy on left. Hard Linotype alloy on right. 850 fps
