Considering the membership here, thought I'd mention there is a successful tinnitus study in NZ. Seems a promising therapy for a high percentage of sufferers.

Been dealing with tinnitus for decades. Interestingly enough, the most recent set of hearing aids provided by the VA (vets with hearing loss can get a new set every 4 years) made by Phonak, substantially reduce the tinnitus. Not sure why, the previous set of hearing aids made by Siemens did nothing for it, but these Phonak hearing aids are very helpful.

I ain't gonna kill my crickets! They been around a long time, and I'd miss em badly if they left! :D
Other times, that buzzing ballast in an old fluorescent fixture brings back fond memories of old gas stations and diners on warm summer evenings....;)

Interesting read. I have been suffering for about 4 years now. Surprisingly it came on strong after I had my ears cleaned from a ear infection.
I use a window unit air conditioner from spring until very late fall and the white noise very much has improved my condition. Higher altitudes seem to provoke my tinnitus.

b w zip; thank you for sharing this information. I'm ONLY 65, but it's been bothering me for maybe 2 years, but now I know how my dad felt, along with many other older people I've known. I hope their research and testing is done expediently so I don't have to shove chop sticks in my ears. (Personally, I think the commies shipped this gosh awful torture to us Westerners!)
Again, thanks for the info and giving us hope.

I had a noise like a bad bearing in a generator or electric motor for several years. Went to the ear doc and he said learn to live with it. It finally quit. I am so deaf I probably wouldn't hear it now.

Echos my sentiments exactly :D Love my crickets!

Thanks so much for thinking of us and providing the study.

I reckon I'm one where the cure is worse than the disease. I do occasionally hear Lee's crickets, but my hearing is still outstanding, so good that it can be detrimental. When the frig kicks on two rooms away while I'm asleep it wakes me up (new frig, and it's far quieter than the old one).

After surviving plandemic pneumonia last fall my doc wanted me to use a concentrator at night to keep my oxygen level up. I put the machine three rooms away and used the extra long cord to get the air to me. Still too loud. The doc said, "It's white noise." Sounded like a generator running at the base of the control tower when the power would fail. I quit using it. Now I have a CPAP. It's like a whisper compared to the concentrator, and it's still too bloody noisy.

I've not mentioned the crickets to my doc. They come and go. B'lieve I'll just live with 'em.

I just ignore it as much as possible. Sometimes that works better than other times.

There's some interesting techniques on youtube as well. Some help, but seem ridiculous on their face.

I flunked the draft physical in January 1971 due to a "high frequency hearing loss" which in my case was tinnitus.
It hasn't improved any over the 50 years. I had a pair of hearing aids for 6 months that didn't help at all.

My tinnitus is not constant, which is fine with me, but when it is active it is very distracting and sounds like I have a cicada stuck in each ear. I wonder how effective this treatment will be with people who are temporary suffers like me.

Same with me its not consistent.
Interesting to hear the cricket and cicada references. Mine sounds like engine noises while traveling in a airplane. Curios how many different sounds are happening.

I'm 65 and have had tinnitus since I was seven. It can be pure torture. In the summers growing up, I slept in the room with the big window fan to drown out the noise. I hope this treatment is effective and available soon. It would greatly improve my quality of life.
