Tired of 442-2 rusting with pocket carry

Today, I traded my 442-2 for a 642-2. I then removed the 642's boot grips and replaced them with a set of Hogue Bantams. I did this because with the Bantams there is no grip screw to rust. I now have my ultimate everyday carry gun loaded with Golddot 38+P's for short barrels.
Can't wait to get to the range.

Congrats on the 642..
You can't hardly get a better pocket revolver than the 642..
Also sorry to hear you had rust issues with the 442, i would think that wipeing it daily with a CLP soaked cloth would have prevented any corrosion issues..
It's hard to carry a larger heavier handgun after you've been spoiled with the Airweights size & weight..

"Guns & Ammo" magazine has a short article on the 442/642 revolvers this month in the "Proofhouse" section.

This topic reminds me to wipe mine down.......;)
It's gotten to a point when I don't have the little bug, I feel weird going outside.......

Sorry that your 442 didn't work out for you.

.

Me too.

Robert, do you mind sharing a bit about: -what general environmental conditions you pocket carried your 442 in (wet or humid for example)
-how long had you had your 442?
-where on the firearm was rust showing up?

I just haven't heard of this problem before.
However, I am new to the maker and model; I've had my 442 for a little over a week. So, I'm quite curious.

Thanks for your time.

In the mid to late seventies I carried a model 38 using a hip grip. The revolver was sandwiched between my BVD's and Levi's. It was carried generally anytime I was awake. Sweat and condensation was problematic, even in the winter months. A good portion of the black finish on the aluminum had been worn off and despite daily applications of Rig (grease) I was having so much trouble keeping rust at bay I finally opted to spray paint the cylinder and the barrel black.

We didn't have a lot of options back then (the model 60 wasn't available.)
If I were again faced with this problem I think I would try the Duracoat process.
A lot of Keltec owners use this and seem quite happy with it.

even with a 642, i would still wipe it down on a regular basis, especially under the rubber grips. this was pointed out to me one year when i found rust and pitting on my models 640 and 60 from the humidity.

I still carry a 442 everyday, but I have had surface rust appear after a couple of days of training in the Tx sun. Sweated right though the Don Hume pocket holster. The best product I have found is Sentry Solutions Marine Tuff-Cloth, A quick wipe-down every few WEEKS, and I havent had any more corrosion.

Good Luck.

i have a pair of 640-1, bought both used as project guns. One had a fair amount of pitting under the grips. They are both refinished, one in chrome. Expensive little guns in the end, but I feel like they will do their job if ever required.
