Hi all....
I have a walther p-22. It has worked pretty good, very early unit, so maybe it shouldnt have worked at all.:D
But it is smallish, and sometimes has issues.
So i was thinking of getting an m&p 22.
A friend who handled and shot one say's it felt to lite, and the finish had started to wear on the slide with only a couple hundred round's through it.
Am still thinking about it though, but ruger threw me a curve ball.
They came out with the sr 22. Review's have been great so far.
I like it,not much bigger than the walther, but the grip feels better, and the reliability seem's mile's away from the walther.
Anyone compare the m&p22 with the ruger sr22?
What are you guy's thought's on this?

Thank's every one
Have a great day:)

I posted this thread recently about my SR22.

http://smith-wessonforum.com/lounge/235008-ruger-sr22-pistol.html

I love the pistol and take it on every range trip. In fact I just shot it about half an hour ago at lunch. It cannot completely replace my GSG 1911, but is far above it or any .22 pistol I've shot in reliability. Zero malfunctions of any kind so far with Fed Bulk and Mini Mags.

Sorry, I don't have an M&P 22 to make the direct comparison you want though. Based on what I've read and handling one in a store, I have no desire to buy one.

m&p22

Thank's Dragon88.
Oop's, i forgot about the Sig 1911-22, which i like too.
So i guess i wanted to compare the M&P-22 to the Ruger sr-22, and the Sig 1911-22.
I am leaning toward's a full size dedicated combat style 22 pistol.
Thats what i need help with;)

My personal opinion is that the M&P is a better choice if you are looking for a trainer. My M&P has a feel much like my XDM 9mm. A few ounces lighter but with similar balance and grip size.

I recently handled a P22 and feel that it is too light for my use. The SR22 is a little heavier though.

By the way, I have just shy of 2000 rds through my M&P with zero issues. I do have the impression that the bluing is not up to the standard of my XDM but that is just a feeling, I don't have any wear marks on the M&P.

Jerrybruce...
I dont own an m&p, but do own glocks ,cz's,1911's, and browning hi power's.
Those are my favorite's.
Thanks for the info.

Both the M&P and SR were on my need list. The M&P is no longer on my need list. Got my hands on one at a gunshow and wasn't impressed enough with it, especially for the price. My thoughts on that plastic thumb safety weren't pleasant, it's big, and it flexes.

Had the gun been made by Smith, no doubt I'd have a different opinion.

I do have two of the Sig Sauer 1911-22, one FDE and one OD. They are absolute fun to shoot. The only thing I've noticed that you have to watch out for is over loading the magazine. They are advertised as 10 round, but will hold 11. If I load 11, I always had and issue with the next round chambering. Only loading 10, never and issue. This is with Federal bulk 550 and CCI Blazers.

The SR22 is still on my need list, and from what I've read, it'll stay there until I buy one.

I'd also feel different about the M&P even though not made in house, if it were a hundred bucks cheaper.

same feeling that I have...
I had the chance with the SR22 and quit impress with everything it has to offer as well it function flawlessly plus the inviting price point over Sig mosquito and the Walter P22

I haven't had the chance to get my hands on the MP22 so I'm still on the fence with this one but not made in house & price point is making me gravitate around the SR22 and put off the MP22 unless one so happens to falls from the sky... only thing it has going for it is a full size in a 22 caliber

I have an SR22 and love it. Its a great little plinker.
I wouldnt hesitate to pick one up, especially if you like the Walther, which I have as well. The Ruger is far preferable IMO. I wouldnt even consider a Walther at this point.

The only S&W 22 that I would keep over my SR22 is my 422. Love that gun! In fact they are similar in the sense that they are both quite light, and a I tend to prefer a light, short barreled 22.

Happy hunting!

I chose the M&P22 and couldn't be happier. After checking out the Ruger SR22 and Walther P22 I started wondering if I really wanted such a small framed gun. After shooting them I was certain that I didn't. I wanted something that filled my hand and felt sturdy and substantial. My M&P22 has been nothing but a rock star; accurate, reliable and a whole lot of fun. Based on my experience, I would highly recommend you try before you buy.

M&P22. It's a full size gun unlike the SR22 and P22. Mine has been perfectly reliable with any ammo, it's very accurate, and comes from the factory with a threaded barrel. For me it was a no brainer because I have an M&P pistol. The Ruger does look nice but I've heard it's also made by Uramex(same as P22 and M&P22), I could be wrong on that account.

You are, it's 100% American made.

I have an M&P 22 and think it is great. Its almost 100% reliable with cheap bulk pack ammo. I think if you want a full sized 22 you would not be disappointed in the M&P. The Ruger is on my short list also but some say I have WAY too many .22s.... I will be waiting for a threaded barrel option though. One thing I see as an advantage on the Ruger vs the S&W is the exposed hammer and double strike capability. A not well known option you should check out is the Bersa Thunder 22/Firestorm FS22. Although its my cheapest new gun purchase at $240, it remains my favorite 22 pistol. They are DA/SA like the Ruger, look good, all metal construction (aluminum frame, steel slide) still light weight, and reliable with most bulk pack ammo. And most holsters/accessories for the Bersa Thunder 380 also work for the 22.

I went to my LGS today with my brother in law. We looked at ever 22 in the place. He ended up getting the Sig Mosquito, its a nice gun. I looked at the Walther P-22, Sig Mosquito, Sig 1911-22, S&W M&P22, Ruger Mark III, Ruger 22/45 and the Colt 1911 Rail Gun 22. I've found plus's and minus's with all of them, but I think my next 22LR hand gun will be either a Mark III or a 22/45

I really wish you hadn't said good things about that Bersa 22. I love the 380, and I don't own one. A friend does and it's the most accurate pistol for me, that I've ever shot. I've looked that the Bersa's at the gun show and really have no idea why I haven't bought one yet, they are inexpensive and I have never heard a single person have a bad thing to say about them.

And really, can you ever have too many 22's??

M&P 22 for me.It has been a good training pistol for my full size M&P.

That's a nice set up cactus-jack.:D
Was also thinking about the Sig. 1911-22.

I have looked at both, and they are very fine guns to be sure. I would choose the M&P22 as I already have the M&P9 and this would be a cheap alternative on the ammo side of things. There seems to be no issues I have ran across while researching the M&P that would cause me to not buy it. What is holding things up is the lack of funds at the moment. Of course, all donations accepted for this awesome in depth review.

if you really want a depenable and accurate 22 get the ruger mk111 you will be very happy with it. i have the m&p 22 and it is a good trainer for someone that has it's bigger brother, but i am not impressed with it's accuracy (3''-4'' at 25yds)and reliablity(dose not like the cheaper ammo) my ruger will shoot groups half that and eat anything i feed it.....
