To lube or not to lube; thats the question...

After cleaning; should I lube the barrel of my 686? I'm pretty new to handguns so forgive this simple question.

If your going to store it for awhile I'd say yes,if it's you carry piece and you never know when you will need it I'd say no.

"Bullets are not squeegees!"

Dry barrel if you're using it, wet barrel if you're storing it.

Hehe good one. Thanx guys! I was just philosophizing, that a wet barrel might pick up more residue, thus get more messy when firing. I'll go for a dry barrel than!

When done cleaning, take a fresh patch with just a drop of gun oil on it, just enough to leave a very thin film as you run it through on the cleaning rod one last time. Thats always worked for me.

Since I was 7 yrs old I was taught a dry barrel for shooting and thin coat of oil for storing, but some shoot with an oiled barrel.

I shoot with a dry barrel.

I oil my barrel, then run a dry patch through it. For storage and for shooting. Never had a problem.

Hi I use Militec-1 Dry impregnated lube on all my guns.It bonds to the metal using a sparing coat on all metal surfaces.All my guns function flawlessly,are lubricated,but never wet.It also makes cleaning a breeze.If you ask for free sample they will send you one.Once you get to using it you will be hooked.....God Bless....Mike

I'm with Cruiser on this one. Militec seems to be the new juice to use. Slicker than eels.

oil of some sort and wipe when using.
More oil when storing.

I have had 1 stainless s&w with rust spots inside and out.
I have 1 stainless ruger with rust spots inside and out.

I think those guns had had no care for years by their owners.

Stainless is very forgiving but it will rust.

They both cleaned up well but were not spotless.

I always do. Go with a light coating of gun oil, wet patch of oil followed by 1 dry patch.

If you go shooting 1 minute later, the barrel for all intended purposes is dry. If the gun is dripping wet, your shirt gets wet, so just a film of oil all over is all that is needed over metal surfaces. Too much is not a good thing, as it collects dirt & dust, just a wipe down with a oily rag.
