Big day. This year the uncontrollable Ron Dixon moved his National Gun Day show to the same weekend as Court days. So my wife and I took in both shows!

Court days is nearly as old as the country, and probably as old as Kentucky (1792). Its a tradition in farming country. The harvest is in so all the farmers brought their excess livestock and harvest to the county seat. All the buyers from around the area show up. They buy the farm produce and the farmer go around to those who extended them credit, and to the Courthouse to pay their county taxes. The tradition extended on to all kinds of hawkers, probably ladies of ill repute, and surely the gamblers and con men. But the farm families all came to town. It was a huge celebration, where new cookware, clothing, tools, and yes, guns.

Its such an interesting show because of the traditions of everyone coming in to buy and sell guns. Well, food and housewares, too. Its not at all unusual to see a family where the mother is carrying a long gun or two, and maybe has a handgun tucked in her belt, just like dad and the older kids. Enough to make a liberal panic! :)

This is the first year I've ever visited on Friday. Always before I was working so we just went downstate on Saturday, the big day. Its easily the biggest open air, disorganized gun show I've ever seen. Guns were being sold right alongside socks and belts.

You see a real assortment of guns, with long guns being more prevalent than handguns, but there sure are a lot of handguns, too. Its pretty normal for me to buy a gun at these things. I see guns that may have never been out of the hills before. Today's score was a pretty common 629. Its a no dash gun, P&R, and better than the -1 gun I have. That will go on sale tomorrow morning at 0800.

It will probably shock those living behind enemy lines, but I didn't see even a single FFL selling guns there. All were casual sales. As always I offer to show them my KY drivers license and CCW (so there's a fair chance I'm not a criminal.) The seller just showed me his, too. Neither of us really want any paperwork, just an added burden.

We only spent a few hours there. Loaded down like a rented mule, I trudged back to the car and stowed all of our other goodies. My wife wanted a bunch of kids books and I bought 3 dozen socks. Another tradition - half for my oldest son.

Then we headed west on I-64 to Louisville to catch the opening of the setup time for NGD. Its not fair to say we helped David Carroll set up his tables. He pulled the vanishing act, and the rest of us set up his tables! :) Its not all hard work. He brings in some pretty spectacular guns, and we get to handle them. There are times when I wish I was still working so I could justify buying some of them....

I did score a set of N gold medallions. I've got a nice little 4" Triple Lock that needed them. They fit pretty good, not perfect, but they look nicer than the pearlies that were on it. Those will also be for sale at the same time as the now obsolete 44.

It'll be a long weekend. One of my son's is coming to my house at 5:50 to drive me down and back tomorrow. It'll be a good time, as always. With any luck I'll sell enough to cover the table rent. :(

Saw and visited with GF and Doublesharp for a while. Tomorrow I expect to see Dave Keith. And probably a host of other notables. I assume we'll miss a few regulars.

Today was a good day for me. I made lots of sales (as distinguished from profitable sales). Regardless, my never ending battle to thin the herd moved along. I managed to sell off the 629-1 and the 38/44 HD. About 5 sets of old grips, some I didn't believe I'd ever sell! I also have eliminated my supply of orphaned ammo - stuff left over in odd calibers I no longer own a gun to use it in. .32, 455, and .30 Mauser. I was happy to send it down the road.

We had a lot of visitors. Many from here on the forum. Had a good long talk with Doublesharp. GF was around for a while, but he wimped out and left.

And the show was Blake-free (Blakeless?). Rumor had it he went to a wedding instead of coming to the gunshow. The guy clearly has his priorities screwed up! :D And it wasn't even his own wedding! Me, I'm never going to a wedding again. Never. I don't enjoy the events, my sons are married. I don't plan on living long enough to see my granddaughters married. With any luck, my grandsons will elope.

NGD,

Motor up to Louisville to take in gun show. Got there late in the morning, bumped into Doublesharp right on the get go.
He looked younger some how, maybe he's lost weight or something.

Drop by David Carroll's table to drool over the reg. magnums...Hear a comotion a couple tables down,
low and behold it was our own Honorable Dick Burg holdin' court right there smack dab in the middle of the expo hall.

Before I could duck off and avoid a face to face with the ring master,
I was summons before his Honor to answer for my past indiscretions.

After a solid hour of explaining my previous whereabouts and questionable activities...
I glance at the end of the table and there lies a jewel, a peach of an ol' gal, as them Georgia boys might say.

A pre-war HD, not jest any 38-44, but one that was 99% shooter grade.
The perfect specimen for one of my experiments...I mean custom revolvers.

Had pork chop sandwich & pink lemonaid, snagged HD and all is right with world.

Headed back to laboratory to examine the prize more closely...

Su Amigo,
Dave

Always a pleasure to see you, Dave and thanks for the compliment. I have been working out and I believe I had my upper partial plate in my mouth when you saw me. Them gun show babes get to chasing me when I've got all my teeth in, so much of the time I carry em in my pocket. Saves time and hurt feelings. That was a fine looking young pard you had with you. I like his straightforward style and you could sure tell he loved you.

This has been good show for mingling and visiting. Met forum members VM and Bama Biker. Easy guys to like but durned near too young to be playing with wheel guns. Not near as much gray as most S&W guys. Met up with a couple more guys that are forum members but I forgot their screen names. The Fugate brothers bought my best Smith but they paid my price and I believe we were both satisfied. That's what makes a good deal. I did snag a 5 screw k22 Combat Masterpiece that GF first spotted. He had already made the deal of the show (as usual) so he let me have this one.

And Burg, Frakes had an excused absence to leave early. He has concert tickets for a big 401K replenishment tour by an aging rocker, Barry White I think. :D

Hum.... actually I had to stock the penthouse with hot & cold running blonds for Joe Walsh, Don Henley and the boys before the concert.
I had'ta leave early. :)

You know, you pull J. Edgar Hoovers RegMag outta' an old timers knapsack ( still wrapped in Clydes pantyhose! ) at the gunshow and pay him 4 or 5 hundred dollars for it and THESE guys are impressed.

Sheesh!

VM and Bamabiker were in attendance as were the usual suspects. Good to see the 'bama boys! It was good friends & good times!

I missed a coupla' fellas, Keith 44 spl was one I'd like to meet. Maybe next time.

The good stuff always sells first and condition is everything.

Sheesh!

Well, if'n yer talking 'bout me, it wasn't ole Hoovers gun, it was a few higher (but not much). And it wasn't in Clyde's pantyhose, it was in the factory box, as it's been most of the time I've had it.

And I didn't sell it for 4 or 5 hundred bucks, I gave it away. Yep, Honest Injun. And in the 6 or 7 years I've had it, only a few folks knew it even existed, much less the serial or the rock bottom registration number! (Bet Kevin Williams doesn't even have that one on record.) In fact, the number who knew about it was 3, and one of those is now dead! :)

I'm not worried about the guy who I gave it to. He's just happy to be the curator of it for a while. And I have no idea if he'll ever give it back or not.

Mitch and JR ate at Morton's last night and Glen Fry was there. Said he had the best babes money could buy with him. Must have been the ones GF booked.

Bunch of no shows today. None of the aforementioned forum members were in attendance but me. Many empty tables. Nothing much was happening, either. Dickson apologized to his vendors for the small crowds. Bet he doesn't go head to head with Court Days ever again. Tried it this time and got his rear licked. Mass dealer exodus at 1 pm.

See the new thread about gunshow pickers.

Nope Dick, not your fine ol' gun. I'm talkin' about the sack O' guns Joe & I were lookin' at. (kiddin' about the 4-5 hundred bucks)
I would've loved to have that nickel HD.... I did get a phone number you know! Now to save enough beer cans for the buy!

I was impressed by #12 !!!

I had to settle for ANOTHER 617....... (tee hee hee.)

You mean there is more to Kentucky than Newport under Peluso?
There's still a Peluso as mayor of Newport! I can even see Newport from where I'm keying this! Its right up river.

But we haven't had a good gunshow in my part of the state in decades. We must travel to find one.

rburg - I'm upset that I didn't get to meet you. We set up Friday afternoon and walked around buying a bunch of junker grips for future projects. Bamabiker and I were the first to sneak out Saturday as it was dead and we had to hit the road.
GF introduced me to all the locals that I didn't know and kept telling me that rburg had just walked away and was no where to be found {again} ?? I think he was keeping you a secret for some reason :)
Greg and I had a good road trip and set land speed records to and from Alabama on I-65.
The show was especially good for me as I got to meet some internet friends in person : beanbean, greystonedog and dblsharp.
Hope to see y'all again soon!
