Top Tier gas isn't a cureall for an older vehicle but it will help keep a clean engine cleaner.Over the last few years the price has become competitive enough that there really isn't any excuse to not use it if available.

My F150 is only 10yrs old but to breeze through emission tests is a blessing compared to what I went through with my last vehicle.

What say you?

Completly wrong.

I live quite rural and top tear gas is not available up here. I would only use it in my Corvette anyway, my DD 4x4 and my wife's SUV just gets generic 87 octane.

What I do use in my Corvette is none ethanol high test. To me that is the most important criteria for this life long gear-head (now 71)

FWIW I get a few 5 gallon cans of none E, for use in all my two stroke toys and tools

While the base stock is fungible, the additive package differs substantially between producers.

I prefer Marathon, only because it's the last domestically-owned top-tier producer.

Please note, this is not a discussion of octane.

My 27 year old Corvette calls for Premium but I use Regular unleaded in it most of the time. This car is driven less than 1000 per year and I doubt it makes much difference as I only fill it a few times.

Nope. My last car went over 300k on 87. That's all I use.

Also I've never seen 93 or 95 cost less than 87

I've always used what the vehicle owner's manual recommends. I've never owned a vehicle with an owners manual that recommended anything other than regular gasoline. If the engineers that designed the car do not recommend premium, why buy it? Gasoline is a commodity which is graded, if you do not need the higher grade why pay for it?

My F-150 is 12 years old with almost 99K miles on it and it still runs like it did the day I drove it off the lot with 11 miles on it. I may need it some day but I don't so far.

I don't think I'll ever buy another one though. I can't wear it out and I would like a new truck. Miss Pam says "What's wrong with the one you have now. I can't come up with a thing.

If it calls for premium I would use premium. The engine might spark knock under a load with regular. I found this out when I bought my Buick equipped with a supercharger. It called for premium but I thought I would just use regular but it would spark knock with regular. Fourteen years later & using premium it still runs great.

Top Tier gas has nothing to do with octane. It deals with detergents added to gasoline. If a gas station sells Top Tier gas then it applies to every octane sold there.
So how do you know it's top tier. We have 87, 89, 93. That's it. Nothing else to note anything about anything

If you want to talk octane then start another thread. Top Tier gas is about additives in the gas to minimize deposits on the injectors, lifters and combustion chamber. It is a licensed and highly regulated product.

If you are interested then this might help...

It's all about the supplements dude! Supplements bring a higher price than quantifiable attributes like octane levels. I only put natural, organic, gluten free gasoline in my tank; but I do toss in a bit more caffeine because you never know when the extra energy may be needed.

Around here, most of the name brand stations are also top tier, so yes that is where I go, the prices are too close to go to some one-off foreign bearded guy's convenience store/station.

I am sorry to see some folks still believe the myth that premium fuel is better than regular.
If the manufacturer says to use regular, you are doing nothing but wasting your money buying premium, I don't care what your dad or grandad did.

Tell her the same thing when she wants new shoes, clothes or a purse? :D
