Torn between keeping the old, and wanting the new

I used to follow the rule of not selling anything. Then one day I found myself with six figures tied up in a gun collection which gave me more bragging rights than true enjoyment. ( Most were S&W revolvers BTW). Some I shot, some had sentimental value, some just went untouched in the safe. Eventually I sold most of the safe queens off to finance one thing or another. ( Mostly, other guns but there was a boat, garage and the son's degree in there somewhere .)

Now, I still sell two of every three guns I pick up .
Regrets?? None. I think I enjoy the buying testing and selling just as much as the owning. I DO keep the essential 40 or so S&W's around though! :-)

However, make both of those decisions, sell and buy, very wisely. Making either without plenty of forethought will cost you plenty of money - there's a ton of stories on here of very poor choices. Be wise, learn from others mistakes.

Whenever I see one of those "should I or shouldn't I?" threads I just ask how many times you've heard "Sure am sorry I sold that gun" vs "Sure am glad I sold that gun."

I've sold two. Both funded other guns I wanted more. Hated to say goodbye to one and kinda "Meh" about the other.

The funny thing is, the part of my post you quoted commenting on all the poor choices on this board aren't referencing the regretful decisions to sell. I was referring to all the poor buys and sales and buys and sales of guns that don't get used, or paid too much for etc., because the person in question made a bad buy/sale to begin with - impulse decisions.

There's a frightening amount of lack of control on this website every day.

Make a smart buy up front. Buy something that you'll cherish and use for a long time. Something that you won't regret later. Something that you find you had no good reason to buy to begin with.

If you might want to sell something, give the same long (days is not a long time, btw) consideration on any sale that you should give to any buy.

I strongly suspect there would be far less sales if proper consideration was given on the buy and far fewer regrets after a sale if that same consideration is given on the sale.

How many posts do I see on this website urging to buy (or keep) every gun encountered regardless of the circumstances? It's ridiculous.
