torn between these 2 vintage but NIB smithies....

The Origional Poster did not ask us our opinion on the pricing of these two revolvers. Rather he asked which would be a better long term investment.

Agreed.
HPs and 19 are not in short supply. I see many of both for sale, some NIB at gunshows around here all the time. The OPs guns are $200 too high even by California standards.

Agree - I wouldn't say I see a *lot* of them for sale, but I bought a 6" NIB Highway Patrolman a couple of years ago with box and tools for ~$200 less "out the door" than the price quoted here.

I also bought a nickel Model 19 with rubber grips for $499. So deals can be had, it just takes time.

....tell me which of the 2 would be the more desirable model for investment purposes?

Neither would be good investments because they are priced WAY too high, even for NIB guns. I doubt if you would ever recover your "investment."

The original question was which is the better gun for investing in. The prices are not why I plan on paying anyway, but...

Real inflation in our country is not the 2-3 percent we are led to believe, but rather in the 15% area. Think I am off? The way inflation is calculated has been 'adjusted' numerous times. Guess why? Too keep numbers low obviously. Industry plays along by not raising prices outright but by inventing fees. Been to a auto service department recently, now they have a $90 'diagnostic fee' before they do any work. Ha haaa. You actually want to take luggage on your tip? Pay up then. So.... anything collectible of high quality is sure to rise in price as well. You might not be actually 'making' money, but you are preserving it. What seems expensive today might be a bargain in hindsight 5 years later. Not everybody can afford to collect Pythons which undoubtedly are waaayyy overpriced. I would be selling those now if i had some because they are not going to go up foreever, just as stocks dont either. If and when the next recession comes those will be the guns hitting the market first.

If they're from Fugates, I wouldn't take either one if you paid me twice what he's asking to take them. I won't deal with arrogant, dishonest firearms dealers, regardless of what they are selling or at how good of a price.

Thank for all the feedback. I think I will go with the 28. Two reasons mainly (and some would of course disagree). The HP is much more scarce in NIB condition than the 19 and the larger N frame seems to be somewhat more in demand also. Dont get me wrong, I would take both if I had the money now.... :-)

Totally off subject, sorry. If the 19 pictured is the gun for sale and is advertised as a 1975 build shouldn't it have a pinned barrel?I'm far from an expert but I was under the impression that anything built before 1980 was pinned & recessed. From what I can see that 19 is not pinned.Possibly just a sample photo?

that and the blueing is way dull, like the finish on a 28.
at those prices you would eventually make money on these, if you lived long enough.

I can see the pin, although very faint and you have to zoom in big time.

If you are buying them for investment I take it you wouldnt be shooting it at all? Now if I was to pack and shoot it I would go for the 19. Then again, if you plan on shooting one at all, you can find a 95% a lot cheaper, and it would be the same gun after a afternoon of shooting your virgin.

to high,i would'nt even be considering buying either one,to many deals out there to pay top dollar, patience, luck and legwork...........jmo

Are those from John Fugate, from G-broker, by any chance? EVERYTHING he has is top shelf.

High prices aside, there is NOTHING that Model 19 can do that the Model 28 can't do better. If you are shooting magnums, you want the 28.
