The Thicker is home from the hospital! I had a total knee replacement on my left knee......After years of hurting and limping around, I went ahead and (switched the hindge)....
Gives me time to put a good cleaning on my small collection of guns...
Anyone else had the operation? How long were you out of circulation?

When the rehab folks tell ya all the excercises to do . . .

DO THEM! And shoot for 10 - 20 percent more than they tell you!

I do hard, physical work with a fellow who is 80, had both knees replaced over the past 10 years and on a really GOOD day, those of us in our 50's can keep up with him!

His advice; "Work thru the pain and don't stop."

knee replacement

My partner had hers done,said'' 4 weeks to walk'', 6 weeks to drive .Good luck,get well soon.
 
I totally destroyed my knee , as well as the rest of my left leg in a collision with a car while on my motorcycle. Split the socket , lifted the patella , 7 breaks in my femur , 5 in hip , shattered pelvis , 4 vertebrae , 6 ribs , shoulder blade , collar bone , and a 6in section of shin/fib-tib destroyed. 6mos initial hospital stay(4 in traction). Can't say how many operations , pins , rods , screws , skin/muscle/bone grafts.

The lady that lives here just to keep me broke had a total knee replacement a few months back. The best surgeon in the US did it (he is the knee surgeon for the US olympic teams). The surgery did fine. The after effects did not. I would post the photos here but it would turn people's stomach. Let's just say she is facing amputation, knee removal, leg fusion and years of skin grafts.

Now we know why they said there was a chance of complications and had her sign that she accepted the risks.

The photos of her leg are horrible. She is under the care of the ortho surgeon, a wound care surgeon, a plastic surgeon and gets Surgical RN care daily following a month in a hosp and three weeks in a rehab.

This is the best photo I can post that shows the eschar and not the depth of the damage.

I could sleep for the first time in years. I had mine 5 years ago and it feels better than my good one. Do the work, you'll be up and around in no-time.
 
Because I work in a level one trauma hospital and deal with patients at all levels every day, I can tell you that everyone is different. I've seen people have both done at one time and a month or two later you would never know it. I've seen people who've had one done and did well and those that didn't. I've also seen some horror stories with my aunt being one of them. She got a massive infection, had to have it removed and a block inserted until it healed. After they put her second new knee in, she never walked again without a walker and ended up in a wheelchair. She has now has lost all use of that leg.

Work hard and listen to what your PT tells you - you'll do fine. Good luck :D ! By the way, I need two new knees (because of high school football) and a right hip (because my knees ruined my hip) :( .
 
I had my right hip replaced in August 2010 and my right knee replaced 3 months later in January 2011. Great results. I was laid up about 3 or 4 days with either one, and back to normal activities within 6 weeks of each. I did stay off my motorcycle for 90 days after each surgery just cause the docs asked me nice not to ride till then. Do the PT. Very important!
 
After 13 arthroscopies, 2 acls repairs over the last 35 years, I had both knee's done and cant say one way or another if there better now or before the total knee's were done. Hate getting old lol
 
I had a knee operation two weeks ago. I dont think it was near as extendsive as most the other posters. I just started driveing, use a walking stick yet. Night bathroom calls is the worst to navigate. Once up I am okay. I admit I should be more active.
 
I had my L hip done on a monday and the R done on the following monday. My choice. One hospitalization one Rehab. Next year same thing with the with the knees. The only regret is that I didn't do it sooner. Good luck.

The guy that did mine last year had both of his done six weeks before he did mine. He was moving around so well that I suggested that maybe the guy who did his should do mine. He said that was funny the first 10 times he heard it. :D

One day in bed in the hospital, back on my feet the day after. Rehab started the next week. Do what they tell you religiously. I have a little less range of motion than before but no pain for the first time in a long time. Six months after, I climbed a 150 foot tall Mayan temple in Belize.

I had both knees replaced.
Your physical therapist is your best friend. Exercise is the best medicine.
A rocking chair and a flight of stairs is very good exercise.
It will be a while before you return to chasing girls.
 
I had one replaced in 2005, the other in 2008. The operations kept me from having to retire before I wanted to. I gained about 50 lbs. after the replacements, buut I might have done that anyway. Mine work fine. I walk at least a mile every day and ride the stationary bike when the weather is bad. I'd do it over again.
 
My wife had her right knee replaced last September. Had no problems and has a good range of movement. She would not be walking had she not had it done.

Cannot give you first hand information, as I have not had the procedure. But my beloved wife had both knees replaced at the same time and I can testify that the work and exercises, and everything your physical therapist is gospel. It took her about six (6) weeks to complete the program and it has been wonderful for her (and me). She could barely walk just prior to the surgery and now she is able to keep up and we go as if nothing ever happened.

Physical Therapy is pain + ice, pain + ice and then more pain + ice. You'll probably hate it but it's worth it in the end. Do what the therapists tell you and even push that little extra. Trust me it makes a world of difference.

I had a partial knee replacement(Oxford) 2 years ago after 5 surgeries on my L-knee.Will be having 2 more surgeries on my R-knee in Oct with another partial knee replacement.As others have said do the PT and all will be good,concentrate on getting the leg as straight as possible that is more important than bending your leg.
 
Same here, I am awaiting MRI results to see if I am going to have a replacement in the near future too.
 
I had my right knee replaced in January of last year then the left knee in late March of last year. Returned to work on 1 July. One year later I still have some pain issues with the tendons and ligaments but both knees function better then the originals did the 5 years before being replaced. I had BIOMET knees implanted; my cousin is the CEO of the company and I went to the Surgeon he recommended.

The best advice I can give is before you have the surgery do as much exercise to strengthen the knee joint and religiously do the PT and at-home exercises.

I work in a job that requires me to climb in and out of commercial trucks all day long; I still have some flexibility issues but I have to say that overall I am a lot better then I was with the original knees...good luck with your rehab.

Happened in 1988. For the first few years , the bad days outnumbered the good by a wide margain. Still have bad days , change in weather , activity , but they're less frequent.

And I'm still ridin'!
 
Haven't had a knee replacement but badly need to have both replaced.

82 year old mother-in-law had one replaced. It turned out well.

60 year old cousin had one replaced. Something happened during surgery that caused her brain to be deprived of oxygen. She was in a coma for four months. Both legs and arms atrophied. Muscle strength and control was gone. Physical therapy for over a year got her functioning again.

Best friend and hunting pal had one replaced...very long horror story that has now gone on for years. He wishes he had never had it done. His wife had one knee replaced six months ago and is doing great.

Meanwhile I contemplate and procrastinate...hobbling and groaning as I go.
 
I am eventually headed for the surgery on my right knee. Then The left. They are telling me I am to young.
 
Thanks for the imput everyone......I WILL follow your advise about therapy......I know it makes no sence, but I guess my thoughts are ...I'm glad I had the operation BUT sorry I did it......
