Hello. I have a question about a trade to see if it is in the ballpark of a reasonable trade. I understand it is up to both involved to determine value. Pics will be included

I have a model 36-1 (3", heavy barrel, 1977ish production) that I'm considering trading for a model 10-6 (4", heavy barrel, anywhere from '62-'77 for production).

The 36 appears to be in nicer condition. The three inch heavy barrel has a following. The 10 is about average shape and a very common configuration. The 10 will be easier to shoot.

Value between the two is a wash in my view. Maybe $50 one way or the other. I have both (multiples of both). I'm a Model 10 fan. J frames and I have a love hate relationship. I like to carry them, I don't like to shoot them.

If you were to compare the average sale prices of 3" Model 36s and 4" Model 10s I feel sure the former would be a bit higher.

That said, I agree with the sentiment that the important factor is the value of each to *you*. Life's too short to quibble over a few dollars here and there. If you want the gun, go for it.

In my opinion trying to assign a dollar value to a potential trade is a mistake...If you want what is offered more than what you have, just do it...If not, then don't...I don't advise such an evaluation technique on marital partners however...:o...Ben

Yeah. What He said!!

Agreed. If you want what he has more than what you have, don't sweat ~$50 (or whatever) value difference. That lost or gained value will likely be forgotten in a few weeks anyway.

I hesitated to chime in here, but I want to offer one comment.

But first, I agree with the others that this is one of those situations where you simply have to decide which of the two you want more. Value, in dollar terms, comparisons really don't matter much in this situation.

Now, my definitive comment: If the Model 10-6 in question happens to be one of the units chambered for the .357 Magnum, then by all means make the trade. While not "rare," those are uncommon enough to make the trade worthwhile, in my opinion.

The 36 3" seems a bit rarer than the 10-6. Personally, I would keep the 36 and buy a 10-6. But that's just me as I never sell or trade. There is a reason you have the 36 in the first place......what is it?

I say go ahead and trade. We've all made trades we've regretted later. You might as well start with this one so you'll be able to say later "sure wish I'd kept that 36 3". What was I thinking."

Actual dollar value of the 36 may be slightly higher. If you both agree with that ask your trade partner to pay the ffl fees on both. Beyond that I agree with those who've said "if you're both happy, trade and be happy".

As stated the 36 would be worth a little more but that model 10 appears to have nice target grips. I can't seem to blow up pics for close look at condition. I like 4" K frames. 3" J frames never made sense to me. Sooooo

Comes down to personal preference. I'd keep the 36. I have several 4" model 10s already with the tapered barrel. I don't like the heavy barrel 10-6.

I would keep the 1977 three inch 36-1 because they do not make J frames that nice anymore.

I'm not a big fan of either, but they made millions of fixed sighted 4 inch barrel .38 Specials, compared to maybe a few thousand of 36-1 3 inchers!
I would keep the 36-1 because they are much harder to find. Buy a model 10 if you really want one. I carried one for years, but do not own one!!
