Trading my Shield 9mm for a J Frame

What's up guys. Looking to trade my Shield for a J Frame. Looking to go back to revolvers primarily. What are youre thoughts on this and are any of you looking to trade?

About a year ago I traded a shield 9 to a friend in exchange for his Model 60 Chiefs Special. It was his idea. I did so knowing that I would be replacing my shield asap.

NEVER would I make the same deal with someone.

I just read a test of an S&W PC627 which is an 8 shot snubbie. I was thinking that 8 shots makes this a LOT more reasonable choice than the old 6 shot snubbies.

five rounds doesn't feel like enough to me.

But 8 does? I could see if you were arguing for carrying a hi-cap. When you consider the odds, 5 or 8 probably won't be what saves the day. I think it's the presence of a firearm that is the most decisive factor, not the capacity. At least it was in my case. It's a very individual decision, and I fully respect yours.

Great username, BTW. I'm a fan.

I sold my Shield 9mm, and replaced it with a S&W 640 J-frame. I'm all done, I'm sticking with the with the J-frame. I must have tried every semiautomatic known to man, and switched back to the J-frame every time! It carries better, and conceals better. It doesn't take two hands to operate either.

Been a while but I wanted to update. Got my 442 threw another deal. But I ended up trading my Shield for a Glock 22 😱. I've been a Smith lover my whole life and a Glock hater but I figured it wasent smart to knock it until I've tried it. Looking for a M&P compact now to replace the Sheild. So far I'm diggin the Glock. It ain't no Smith though I can say that much LOL

Im really just partial to revolvers. I've got a 64-2 K frame that I carry and love it. I've also owned a 442 that I kick myself for every day for getting rid of it. I really just want to get out of plastic guns altogether. Love the shield but there's just something about stainless or aluminum or Carbon steel that speaks to my inner primal manhood LOL

I understand totally. I made the same decision a couple of years ago. Got rid of my semi autos. Purchased a 642 and a GP 100. Love both guns, but the GP 100 with the 4.2" barrel is too big for me to carry concealed. The 642 is a dream to carry, but I get kinda hung up on just having 5 rounds.

So, I purchased an XD Mod 2 9mm subcompact in FDE about 9 months ago. Love having 13+1 and 16+1 rounds available. Just yesterday I purchased a M&P Shield in 9mm with the Crimson Trace Green laser already on it. I will have 7+1 and 8+1 available with that weapon. These two weapons will alternate being my EDC choices

I still have my revolvers, but I have transformed back to semi autos for EDC. The 642 will become my nightstand gun.

I agree with SC Mike. Keep the Shield and buy another J Frame (or carry the one you already have!). Then you can swap carry either one as you choose, or don't, but you will have both. That's never a bad thing!

Pistol family is growing. The Shield was just traded for the Glock in the picture. The 442 Ive had for a while and the model 64-3 was my grandmothers. She bought brand new in 81. Im the 3rd generation of my family to own it. It was the first gun I ever shot and I fully intend to pass it to my oldest son when I kick the bucket. LOL

I've told the story before, but I recently had a a visit with an old partner of mine from back in the 70's/80's. Back then, I had a pair of M60's I used for off-duty and back-up and he conned me into selling him one of them. He said he's getting too old to carry something concealed that's not as flat as possible and asked my opinion. I told him I had a Shield in 9mm and took him to show it to him. After handling it, he asked me if I'd consider trading it to him for the M60 I sold him way back when. Of course, I agreed to the trade without hesitation.

I took the poor old girl and went through her; cleaning inside and out. Finding her to be a bit scratched up, I disassembled her and bead-blasted her. I then cleaned and re-assembled her. I took her out to shoot and found she hadn't lost a step. Great little gun. She now holds a place of honor in my safe as I usually carry my 340 M&P or 640-1 when carrying a J-frame, which is a larger percentage of the time. BTW, I got a Shield .45 to replace the 9mm. I just qualified with it to add to my LEOSA card. What a great little semi. The accuracy and reliability were outstanding.

If I'm understanding correctly, you're going to carry the higher capacity auto's and the 642 will be your home defense weapon?

I'm just the opposite. My thinking is defense scenarios out in public are more likely to unfold quickly, occur at close quarters and be short duration. Avoidance or escape are likely an option. In such circumstances, a hammerless revolver makes sense to me.

I look at home defense differently. My house is pretty secure, so I will likely have some time and distance on my side. The intruders may have formulated a plan to some degree and there could be several of them. I will pretty much have to make a stand. A high capacity semi-auto seems the better choice although I will often still have a snub in the pocket when in and out or at home during the day for more reactive scenarios.

Well said ^, I was thinking much the same things. The "bump in the night" gun shouldn't be the puny 5-shot revolver (which I really like and carry regularly).
Unlike EDC, there are no bulk or weight concerns with the nightstand gun, so why not have something with higher round capacity and more substantive defensive capability?

I have both a Shield 9 and a 640 Pro. I rotate between the two depending how I feel. I must say though lately I've found myself carrying the Shield more then the 640. With the 7 round magazine in my weak side pocket I feel pretty confident with the firepower I'm carrying.

I also have the 640 Pro and a Shield 9. I got the Shield simply because I live in the south and carrying the 640 concealed was a problem. Both weight and imprint with the 640 is a problem with pocket carry since dressing in t-shirt and shorts doesn't leave much else for concealment.
