I got the opportunity to take my son to the Front Sight Firearms Training Institute for a 4 Day Practical Rifle class. It was a lot of fun.

My son is not really into shooting. I mean, he's not opposed to it, but he doesn't get really excited about it. Then again, he hasn't shot much. The rifle he used is one he built, but only had about 40 rounds through it before going to this class.

Here he is sighting it in at 25 yards:

Here is the result of this 3 shot group:

This was a changing point in his shooting career. The grin on his face when he saw this group with all three shots touching, was beaming.

***Note***
This was in interesting concept in zeroing a sight. They put that black diamond on the target and had us aim at the center. We were using sand bags on top of ammo cans for support. If you put the three shot group just at the bottom point of the diamond, like the group you see under the tape, then you'll have a perfect 100 yard zero. It works.

His group was a little low, but considering he's using a 12.9MOA triangle (Trijicon RMR08G) I think it's pretty close.

Later that day we played a game called the Wilson wall.

The object is to take 6 shots from cover. Each shot is taken from a different platform; standing, kneeling and prone. After each shot you move to a different location behind the wall and use a different platform. You're just trying to hit a steel silhouette, but you are moving quite a bit. It's super fun.

No, he didn't shoot the wall. I just took the picture a little early.

On the last day we pitted student vs student in a challenge to see who can shoot three targets the fastest.

See the grey steel target in the middle? See that tiny little yellow plate by the head? That yellow plate simulates a hostage taker's head. You have to shoot the yellow plate first, without hitting the hostage, then the blue target and then the red target. You have to do this faster than the person standing next to you (in this case off camera to the left). He actually beat his opponent, but didn't realize he missed the red target on the first shot right away. He took a second shot and hit it just a millisecond after his opponent. If he had just taken a second shot right away he would have won.

Even so, he had a great time.

The class was great. The learning curve for my son was steep, but he was up to the challenge. His shooting improved dramatically. The staff there is amazing and the training is first rate. I highly recommend this school.
