I hope this is in the right forum place. I've been reading everything I can find regarding handgun transportation in the friendly state of NJ and still can't figure out what's right or wrong. I picked up my model 65 today and the guy at the store said gun in the trunk and ammo in the car. I don't think that's right but I did anyway. Now the question of taking it to the range, specifically from the car to the building. Many neighborhoods that have ranges are in places where I will probably be the only guy not carrying. I don't want a range bag with a big S&W on the side, can I put an unloaded gun in a backpack? Would that be considered concealed carry? Do I need two bags, one for ammo and one for the weapon? Sorry for the questions, I know this isn't going to be and I am not asking for legal advice. I just wonder what other people do.
Thanks

Things are a little different here in Louisiana. Your vehicle car, truck ect is considered an extension of your home. Therefore you can carry legally in your truck but the moment you step out of said truck you'd better have a carry permit. And there are no restrictions about carrying ammo separate from your firearm.Frank

This is from the firearms FAQ's on the N.J. Dept. of Law and Public Safety web site:
Q6. How do you transport firearms?

A6. Firearms shall be carried unloaded and contained in a closed and fastened case, gunbox, securely tied package, or locked in the trunk of the automobile in which it is being transported.

Ammunition must be transported in a separate container and locked in the trunk of the automobile in which it is being transported. If the vehicle does not have a compartment separate from the passenger compartment, the firearm must be in a locked container other than the vehicle's glove compartment or console.

Thanks for this link. i don't like going to new jersey because of the horror stories.

Pennsylvania is easy as long as you have a License To Carry Firearms - LCTF.
The PA LCTF allows you to concealed carry in a vehicle and anywhere else legal. It also allows you the ability to leave your firearms in a locked vehicle while making various stops. You are NEVER allowed to transport or conceal a loaded long gun or shotgun. The LCTF also allows a hunter to legally carry a concealed handgun- even of non hunting legal type/caliber - as a personal protection weapon while hunting with another type of weapon.

Without an LCTF you are not allowed to transport any firearm loaded. More important- you are only allowed to transport a firearm directly to and from your home and the range, gunsmith or hunting area. Your strictly prohibited from making ANY stops in between point A and home if you will be leaving the vehicle for any reason. This provision was tacked onto the law which changed the PA CCW permit into the more inclusive LCTF and we have been fighting to get the 'No Stops' provision removed ever since.

Backpack is fine - just store the ammo separately. If you have the gun in a lockable case, that counts as separately.

I use a range bag, myself, and will keep ammo inside. The pistols are in the bag too but locked up so it's all good.
