My job involves a lot of riding around the county. I see something I think is worth something I stop and ask for it. If it's too big for me to carry I can usually find someone to come get it or have it moved back until I can come get it. Over the years I have found antique bottles, old comic books, furniture, fishing tackle, car parts, several rifle stocks (including a couple of 1903's) and lots of other stuff. One man's trash is another man's treasure.
Or former warehouse manager left to take a job as a Postal Deliveryman. He comes back from time to time to visit with us. Last year he had a story about finding some trash on his route. Sticking out of a trash can was a gunstock and a couple of barrels. When he stopped to look, he discovered the stock had a barrel attached, and the barrels had stocks on the other end. He had a problem. Getting caught with a firearm while delivering mail means the end of his job. But the guns were apparently in nice condition and worth big bucks. So he did what any red blooded American boy would do. He picked them up and risked it. When he got down the road a bit and no houses were in sight, he took them into the woods and stashed them. Then he continued his route. On his way home he picked them up and took them home.
I personally enjoy dumpster diving. I have a basement and garage full of goodies. As the company tosses things out, I've re-designated my jeep as the dumpster. My wife kind of hates it, until I score something great for her. Then she shuts up for a while.
