In the near future I am expecting to travel with a large group, by private bus, to Vermont. I almost always pack.
(Not talking socks here)
I understand that Vermont will not be a problem, but am wondering how to handle the en rout part as we will be traversing several states that do not recognize my permit. I understand Federal Law guaranties a right of peaceable passage; but I wonder how best to handle this.
Unloaded, in a container packed in the bottom of my duffle, is what I expect would be best.
What say you people in the area. I'll be passing through Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, that I know of. I am totally unfamiliar with the area, but have heard horror stories about people blundering into a felony record without realizing it.

Pack your empty handgun in a locked case, in your luggage. Pack your ammo seperately (even in your wifes luggage). NO HOLLOWPOINTS! Hornady critical defense is ok. I hope this helps.

What do you mean by "private" bus? A chartered commercial bus? A privately owned bus? The TSA has rules for bus travel that are similar to the rules for airplanes.

By Private I mean, not commercial, not chartered, privately owned by an individual, driven by a licensed driver. Along the lines of a motor home but without sleeping quarters or dining facilities.

Your understanding about transporting firearms and the states you're going thru are not necessarily the same thing. Federal law lets you transport 'thru' states, not the same as if you stop in those states. In any case the firearms have to be unloaded and secured, ammo also. They also are still subject to the laws of the states you're in. Don't have mags of more than 10 rounds, or hollow points in some of the states you mentioned. You should have them in the 'trunk' or lugage compartment - not anywhere where you have 'access'.
NJ busted a guy cause he took his guns from the trunk into the hotel room. You're not dealing with gun friendly folks. In any case check each state for their laws. Handgunlaw or other sites can give you guidelines, but you might want to contact the authorities directly in the states you plan to go thru.

If you have a class III stamp on a weapon carry it. Send the states a notice you are going to come through. Sometimes fed regs work beter than state (not too often though).

Not sure. But if the bus has a locked trunk or luggage compartment you may need to keep the gun there to comply with FOPA.

I do not know what to do if you stop at a motel to sleep.

There are no intentions of stopping in any other state beside Vermont, but things do happen on the road. I once spent three days in Atlanta, when a buddies Harley broke down.

I be afraid of the State Mass. They are not friendly, a friend had trouble with that state traveling thru.

While traveling I would lock the guns away, unloaded, with ammo stored separately. I'd not take them out for any reason and not tell anyone they were there. And an advance welcome to Vermont, the Green Mountain/Gun friendly state.

I would highly advise against bringing your weapon into New York. N.Y. is very handgun unfriendly. Unless something has changed, NYS doesn't recognize any other states CCW permit. Unlike my home state (Alabama), carrying a firearm (NYS termonology for a handgun) on the first offense is a felony. If you should get caught you'll wish you had left it at home. NY may, and I want to emphasize may allow transport of a firearm if the person is passing through the state on the way to a sanctioned match. Good luck, and have a safe trip to Vermont. It's a beautiful state.

NYS does not,, as already pointed out, recognize any other State Pistol Permit.

The NYS version of the Fed Assault Weapon Ban is still in effect here. It never went away.
Only HiCap mags made before '94(?) are legal (if you can prove it). Otherwise 10 rd detachable mag only.
L/E exempt.

The FOPAct for the traveling public is of course in effect but it's been knocked around and arrests have been made over and in spite of it in NY (and NJ).
Those in power seem to of the mind set in some cases to arrest first and let the courts settle the thing.

Some in L/E aren't even aware of the FOPAct.
An unregistered pistol to them in NYS is just that.
It's either plainly printed out on a NYS Pistol Permit by serial number, make and cal,,and the permit has your name, address, etc on it,,,or the the gun and you are going away.

There used to be and it still may be in effect the afore-mentioned section allowing O/OState pistol shooters to bring their gun into NY State for a 'sanctioned target match' (what ever that is in legal terms).
Kind of like the FOPAct,,drive right to the match w/o stopping,,shoot,,drive home. Do not stop.
Gun and ammo locked in separate boxes out of the drivers compartment. ect, ect
What a fun day in the Empire State that would be.
