Last month was my 65th birthday (yea, I made it to Medicare). :D

My Son bought me a bottle of Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Barrel Strength which is 116.8 proof - BUT super smooooooth! I was quite surprised that it was so rich, flavorful and creamy without the super heat. I must say it is much better than I had imagined based on the regular Wild Turkey 101. This IMHO is way better than the 101!

While it is a mid range priced Bourbon, it is quite reasonable compared to many other Bourbons not even close to being this good. I believe it runs around $55 bucks or so which for a Bourbon of this quality, age and proof is very reasonable to say the least! This is something I did not think about buying but I am very happy my Son did! I WILL be buying another bottle when this one is done and I do highly recommend drinking it neat and sipping it when you have time to relax. A true Bourbon lover will really appreciate this one. :)

It sounds like it would be well worth trying the next time I pick up some bourbon. Thanks for the info and Happy Belated Birthday!

Next time I'm on a Binny's run I think I'll give it a go. Thanks for the review.

Hope you enjoyed your birthday. A bottle of good bourbon never hurts!

I'm maybe no judge of whisky though, I'm sitting in my shop right now with a glass of Jim Beam and coke (gotta mix this stuff or its too hard to swallow). Ogling my old Chevy beside me and wishing it was warm enough to either go burn some gas or go shooting. Its my birthday too, just turned 44. I've been alternating between browsing this site and shopping for a new to me Smith 29 to commemorate my day.

For straight sipping, my first choices are (in order of preference):

Blanton's Original
Four Roses Single Barrel
Elijah Craig Small Batch
Bulleit 10 Year.

I saw that Wild Turkey Rare Breed in the store last weekend when I was in a city. Was undecided about it so picked up my 2 favorites, Angels Envy and Elijah Craig Small Batch.

All great choices - I have them all as well. IMHO the WT Rare Breed is in some ways better - BUT that is a personal thing depending on personal taste. That said - Cheers! :D

Happy Birthday! I am a big bourbon fan. Haven’t tried he Wild Turkey. My personal favorites are Elijah Craig, Buffalo Trace, Old Forrester Prohibition and Basil Hayden. My local spirit store just got the Elijah Craig Barrel Proof in. Can’t wait to try that. Prefer to indulge on the rocks. Enjoy...

Yup - I like those too, especially the Basil Hayden. :) For many many years I drank Bourbon on the rocks but started drinking it neat about 3 years ago - its a completely different experience and you will taste things that you just can't with ice. Try it with the BH first - it's the smoothest. Even Jack tastes much better neat now (to me). Cheers!

I too like the Rare Breed. Given my budget, that’s ‘top shelf’ for me. It is indeed head and shoulders above the regular 101. Totally different animal with a lot less edges. Prob my favorite bourbon.

I was at the store this morning and after looking at the prices on bottles of bourbon all I can says is YIKES.

I think I have 4 choices

1. start a "fundme" account

2. take out a loan

3. get a small bottle of dirty bird. a half gallon of dirty bird in the class VI store on base was about $6.

4. buy ammo

I chose the ammo

I’ll have to give that one a try. It just so happens that Mrs. RSBH44 is out of Lemonchello so I’ll be making a run into town after work to replenish her libation and mine too while I’m at it. Can’t wait to try it.

I drink my whiskey neat and like the high proof stuff.

My favorite bourbons in order of what I have on hand are...

Booker's 129.7
Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve 120
Elijah Craig Barrel Proof 131
Old Weller Antique 107
Henry McKenna 10 year (BIB) 100
Old Grand Dad 114

And one I try to always have around is Evan Williams White Label (BIB) 100
