I have an M57 nickel with target hammer and trigger. Wide trigger is not my pleasure and would like to change it out. How much fitting is involved? I have worked over and built several 1911 pistols and tuned one Colt SAA but am not a revolver smith.

Almost certainly would be less cost and trouble just to take the trigger out and cut it down some to suit your taste. Once you get through the surface hardening, you can cut it just like any steel piece.

A new trigger might drop in and work OK, might not. Most of the fitting is done on the hammer, but the faces on the trigger may need tuning.

Thanks for the advice. This work I can do.

Please do not cut down the Target Trigger. They are getting hard to come by and you will want to put it back in the gun if you ever sell it. triggers are easy to fit. Most require no work at all.

Shucks! I was just getting my angle grinder fixed up with a new blade. Looked like I could do this job without taking the trigger out of the gun but now you got me worried. I suppose if I wanted to "put it back," I could build it up with some welding and grind it to shape. Probably could do that too without removing the trigger.

I guess I will have to post a WTB for a skinny trigger. Thanks fellows.

S&W offered several different options for Triggers so you might want to do a bit of research before putting in a WTB ad.

Dan,
Put the angle grinder down and step away,... keep your hands where we can see them...

I have a skinny serrated standard trigger that is used but not fooled with,... but it is stripped, as in no pins, strut or spring. you can switch these parts from your current trigger, but it is nice when you don't have to do that.
If you want to give it a try I can put it in todays mail. $20 if you like it or return it if you don't.

Mayhum's offer is a generous one and should be considered. S&W used to sell target hammers and triggers in blister-packed displays for aftermarket sales. They were almost always a simple drop in proposition with no fitting. Remember that if you proceed to grind on your TT, that the flash chrome will be gone, subjecting the trigger to handling rust and staining.

Fellows,
Thanks for the advice and offers of help with my trigger. I was stirring the pot with suggestions of grinding and welding. Looks like it worked. It reminds me of a time at the LasVegas Gun Club when I was shooting an informal round with an old boy who had a fantastic Perazzi single. He allowed that it was shooting low and walked over to his car, stuck the barrel between the bumper and hitch and proceeded to bend it. He went back to the pad and shot like crazy. He was a better man than I.

We know you were kidding, and we didn't really arrange to have the power cut off to your house/grinder... well, at least we are pretty sure we got the order canceled in time.

Trigger went out yesterday.

OMG!

Just the thought of someone grinding a target trigger.....I'm probably going to suffer a nightmare tonight.

I am glad you and MakeMyNight are going to cut me some slack on my trigger adjustment. Since it it -3 degrees right now I would hate to see the power shut down.

Dan.

Well, friend MakeMyNight, rest easy as the trigger is safe. I do have to do something to entertain my self here in the Bad Lands of North Dakota so I thought as soon as the nickel M29 I bought from Jelsis gets here I can get the electric engraving pen out and do my name and social on cylinder, back strap and barrel. Won't that be precious?

Obviously a refugee from the Ruger board. Seriously, if you need a narrow trigger you can contact me too.

Sweet dreams

Dan,
Maybe you can match your 29 up to my 1950 Target that, when the electric pencil gave up, he finished it up with stamps made for tooling leather,... determination.

Dan,
TRiggers for the K,L,and N frame are interchangeable. The three standard sizes are .400 Target, .312 Combat and .265 Duty. All three sizes can be had serated or smooth. (its hard to find a smooth .265). If you shop around the various S&W models on Numrich (e-gunparts.com) you can find one of the trigger assemblies (all pins springs and connecting rods are extant) that meets your needs. If you want ed a smooth .312 you could order this one from a model 15. Smmoth .312. Most trigger swaps are drop-ins with no fitting required.
