Trigger Stop

[Shooting Padre]

I have a Model 15-4 that has a cut out behind the trigger for a trigger stop, but it is evidently missing. My Model 18-0 has the trigger stop, and it is shown in the parts list and exploded view of the Model 15. Can anyone (is there any doubt) enlighten me on the purpose, need and availability of this item? The revolver functions perfectly without it, as does the Model 18 with it. Just need the expert opinions and thoughts of all the fine folks in the forums. Thanks in advance for your input.

The trigger stop keeps the trigger from "over-traveling" and perhaps pulling the shot. It is really not needed in anything but a serious bulls-eye competition gun. Many model 15's had the trigger stop removed by the police departments using them as it was thought it could loosen up and move, thus making the gun inoperable. I do not believe any current models have trigger stops provided for.

Thank you, H Richard. Getting that added bit of information is what makes this sport so interesting and fun. I have a much better understanding on why they were removed. In fact, the model 15 I have was a police trade in. Take care and happy shooting.

Some of my guns have a Trigger Stop and some don't. I have never noticed a huge difference in their performance, and on a carry gun I would probably remove it if the gun I designated for SD had one. For target work, weather it's there or not does not excite me or bother me - sort of a non-issue for me.

My used 15-6 came without the overtravel stop. The little empty slot didn't look right to me, so I ordered a stop and screw from Brownells.

Installed the parts with LocTite and in over 10 years it has never come loose.

If you replace the missing over travel stop I would recommend adjusting it to maximum stop and if the hammer drops 100% of the time tighten it down and let the lead fly. I have a few with the stop and have never had a problem. There are many threads about this device on this forum, with many varying opinions. I would venture to say, most here would say leave it out, since it's already gone. That part is just my guess after reading many of those posts.

I found that N frame guns that I bought in the 1970s also had a different style of trigger stop device. It is a simple metal pin that is adjusted to length and rides inside of the trigger rebound spring, seems like a simple system with nothing to come loose. When you could get these parts from the factory, I installed them on my K frame revolvers.

If you need one let me know, I've got a parts drawer full of them. We removed all of them from duty guns.

The stop doesn't do a whole lot. If you miss it, replace it. If not, you're still good to go.

According to AGI instructor, Ken Brooks, when he worked as a gunsmith for S&W, they were told to remove these stops whenever they worked on a revolver that had them.

It makes a handy place to keep a spare rear sight attach screw, in case that should ever get lost.
