I just ran into an early serial number 6.5” .44 spcl triple lock in the 81xx s/n range at a gun show. It’s in pretty rough shape, lots of finish missing/browning but it seems to be original and function seems to be very tight. As rough as it is the barrel, cylinder, and barrel all match. The guy wants 1250 for it. Is that anywhere near a good price?

Most of my regrets

Are not buying a gun when I had the chance
Assuming of course you are wanting this model in your stable
Maybe try to knock a hundred off showing a wad of cash towards seller ?

A lot depends on you definition on "rough". If the metal is smooth with only the ninorest of pits, that is probably a good price. Also depends on the grips' origionality (recessed gold medallion) as they can be expensive to find. TLs were working guns, and I'd rather have no finish than rplaced finih (yeah, I know my latest has aftermarket finish). So, a 6.5: TL with 30% original blue and correct grips could easily bring 1500 almost any day of the week. No finish and wrong rips maybe 1000. JMHO.

Well I passed cause I just bought a 627 this week. Seems like every time I buy something 3 other really exciting things pop up. But I got the guys card and might try to get it later if it survives the show.

Pretty sure the grips were original but the right panel had a large chip on the butt and the checkering was pretty much smooth. And rode hard and put away wet might be more accurate than rough. Fingers crossed it survives and I can pick it up later once some funds free up.

The consolation prize I did get from the same guy was a pair of K square combats that look new for 120.

My only comment is why would you want to spend good money on anything in "pretty rough shape"?

High condition guns hold their value or appreciate. Low condition guns continue to depreciate. It is the way of such things----each and every time.

Plan B might be to put your $1250 in your piggy bank, and keep adding to it as you can until such time as you can buy a proper Triple Lock.

The last two I know anything about sold recently for $10,000 and $8825 respectively. Needless to say, they weren't in pretty rough shape. The first one was bought about 25 years ago for $5250. Now that isn't a particularly good investment, but it wasn't bought as an investment---and it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick!!! The other one was bought about 7 years ago for $9500, which might've been a bit too much---or maybe it was just not far enough back for any appreciation to set in. Whatever, it had a good home for a while and was appreciated every moment--never mind it didn't appreciate in value. It certainly didn't depreciate enough to talk about. And at the time it was bought, that question up above about "----how badly do you want one?" could've been answered with it was wanted "A LOT!!"

I dunno. I bought this one from a local private seller, had Nelson Ford go through it, and bought period correct stocks and a historical letter. I'm into it for just under $1,200 in 2016 dollars. Coulda bought something newer, nicer, and more collectible, maybe. My rationale is that it was placed in front of me, I had the cash and the desire, and I can shoot and fondle it without being concerned about current or future value. Follow your heart.

Have about $1200 in this one. Correct grips and I think original finish. Had it for a year or two.

I save up all my bad money to buy substandard guns that l get to shoot, share, and enjoy with no fear of depreciation. I love shooting my Triple Lock and passing it around at the range.

This is a lot closer to what I have in mind. I would be a little over my head if I went for a collector grade piece. I think that those that suggested banking the funds are right but maybe a shooter grade RM would be a more interesting goal.

A matching, mechanically tight and functional 6-1/2" bbl. Triple Lock for $1250...I'm afraid I'd have to take that home. I've been looking for a revolver like that for awhile, but can't bring myself to spend $5K+. In that condition you could probably put out 10 or 11 Benjamins and the seller would wrap it up for you. There are not that many TLs floating around.
