Hi guys,

I have an M&P 40 and I am having trouble breaking down the gun. I have done it before no problem.

I reach inside the mag holder and flip the Sears deactivation lever.

I swivle the breakdown lever and try to slide the slide forward. But out won't slide forward of its normal position.

I give up and try to put the magazine back in, but the Sears lever is will not budge.

Any ideas?
Thanks

I have the same gun did you release the side and pull the trigger to remove the slide?

Your sear deactivation lever might be in a bind or even broken so you can do this as follows.

Take the magazine out of the pistol and make sure there is no bullet in your chamber by racking the slide while holding up on the slide stop to hold the chamber open for inspection then rotate the take down lever to the six o'clock position and pull the trigger then push the slide forward and off the pistol and presto you are ready to clean and maintain you weapon.

If this does not work call or contact via email S&W and get you pistol looked at, because you have a serious issue with the weapon, and they will aid in fixing the issue!

Note if your M&P has a mag safety then pulling the trigger will not work and you will have to put the sear deactivation in its proper place to break your pistol down as pulling the trigger on a weapon with a magazine safety will not operate the trigger.

Does your weapon have the writing on the side that says that this pistol can be fired without a magazine? If it doesn't then you probably have one so pulling the trigger will not work, mine has it so I have to flip the sear deactivation lever to break down mine!

I don't even flip the sear deactivation lever. Lock the slide back, flip the take down lever, pull the trigger and release the slide while riding it forward. Slide comes right off.

It actually will work, just not as simple. Clear the weapon, lock the slide back and rotate the takedown lever. Insert an EMPTY magazine. Release the slide lock and point the gun in a safe direction and pull the trigger. Release the magazine and the slide will slide off the front rails.

I am not really a fan of doing it this way, because of the dry fire, which leads to accidental shootings.

I just got a M&P9c a couple of weeks ago. I don't know if anyone else has had this issue with their M&P. After I rack the slide back and push down the takedown lever, it will flip back up on me. I sometimes have to hold it down while bringing the slide forward. Not a big deal but something I have noticed. Maybe this will work itself once the gun is broken in.

My take-down lever will snap back if I don't push it all the way down and hold it momentarily.

On my 45 FS:
Clear the weapon;
Remove the mag;
Recheck - clear the weapon;
Lock the slide back;
Flip the sear deactivation lever down all the way;
Flip the take-down lever down;
Release the slide lock and push down on the slide as I slide it forward.

I never tried to pull the trigger as I slid the slide forward. As I understand, one of the benefits of the M&P is supposed to be the ability to remove the slide without needing to pull the trigger.

Normal on the compacts.

I have tried all the suggestions listed here but no luck. The sear lever is still stuck cannot flip it up or down. I'm thinking I'll haveto bring it to the gunsmith.

Happens on my 9FS and 5" 9 Pro as well. With the FS, the lever basically won't stay down on its own at all.

With the muzzle pointing to my left, I hold the gun in my right hand by the grip, push and hold the lever with my right thumb and pull the slide off with my left hand.
