Can find the whole story.

If it's true, which models will be affected? The way I understand it, S&W needs to keep the lock on any gun they want to sell in California.

Thanks

I just bought a new 642 with no lock in December; I think those ones have always been available in small quantities without the lock

So far, the no lock guns are all J-frames, their bread and butter guns, the ones that that pay the bills. I recently acquired a M340PD and a M351C, both with no lock(actually the 351C has never been made with a lock). Not only did S&W skip the lock, they dropped the dealer cost by about $60. Now is the time to get a J-frame if one wants one. I'm still(after a year) waiting on a M43C .22LR for a training gun. Bob!!

Wow.

S&W continues to amaze me with poor business decisions.

By not making clear exactly when and what models will be offered w/o a lock, I think many folks will be even less likely to buy a model with a lock. Why would someone who really doesn't like the lock buy gun NOW, if there were a chance that it would be offered in the future w/o a lock?

They need to clarify their plans.

I have emailed them to this effect.

What??!! I thought the lock was here to stay and no amount of grousing would change that and we were just going to have to live with it, etc., etc.

That must have been some big pile of "leftover lock free frames." ;)

There have been no revolvers larger than J frames built without the lock. Who knows how much it would cost to have two different frames, but I'd guess there has not been enough opinion against it, or the factory thinks sales volumes in the lock-requiring states justify making them all that way.

Have any of the J frames with no lock had single action capability? I haven't seen any but I could have missed one.

I wouldn't get my hopes up to much, they are being built for RSR and they only have to order 250+ of each one. So that doesn't mean all of them will be non-lock.

I don't think they build a bazillion frames, enough to assemble for years to come, and just leave them lying around.

They probably just remove the frame hole cutting process from the frame making. And then remove the lock component assembly steps from the firearm assembly process.

Leaving stock sitting around for ages and not sold affects the bottom line, successful buisnesses don't do this.

there is not a lot of differences in the lock/no lock frames....a few more or less steps to machine......not a big deal...you would think it would be a pretty simple process....

I wouldn't hold my breath...........don't look for lock-free K and L frames anytime soon.

You'll notice that the only revolvers being made without the lock or concealed hammer DAO models.

If that is their qualification for omitting the lock, the best we can hope for is a concealed hammer L or N frame. :)

well I Know they are doing it on the M&P becuase you cna buy the weapons with or with out locks

So it looks like I will be forced to settle for a M&P 340? What other new, no lock guns are there in .357 for concealed carry from S&W?

I really wanted a DA/SA, because I anticipate recoil to be heavy on a compact .357, and a crisp SA trigger would help prevent a jerk reflex from becoming an issue.
