Try not to laugh. Do you think supplements like fish oil/flaxseed oil help for real?

6-8 years ago I was experiencing pain in joints you might expect when you hit mid 50's. If you are there and don't have such a malady, either your lucky or I'm very unlucky. As a remedy I tried Flaxseed oil. Using liquid, not capsules I was taking maybe 2 - 2.5 tablespoons a day of reputed "good stuff". After a month I swear I felt better. I new a married couple then approx. my age and after some persuasion they both tried it. They went about a month on the stuff at recommended dosage and both reported great results. The guy is a hard case no BS'er so I don't think they lied. I soon thereafter changed jobs and had a lot on my mind. I quit the Flaxseed oil. I'm now going to try "Fish oil". Try not to make too many funny comments. I know it's tough. Do these supplements help or is it a figneutton of my imagination?

I take a fishoil pill everyday. No laughs from me!
Supposed to be good for the heart (everybody in my family has had a heart attack) may help ward off some cancers (ALL my aunt's & uncles died in their 60's from cancer) anything I can take that even MIGHT help me out is a cheap way to help with my "mental health" too!

You won't catch me laughing JcMack. I take a variety of supplements including Flaxseed and Fish oil. I try to eat Salmon at least twice a week.
I also take Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSN in a liquid supplement called "Joint Care". I mix that with Cherry Juice concentrate and it reduces the swelling in my joints.
I've got arthritis in my feet, back and neck. Some of the guys at work told me about the nutritional regiment years ago and it worked for me and others who I have told about it.
I can't run any more but do walk a couple of miles a day and that helps too.
I think that there is a lot that we have forgotten about nutrition and cures over the years that are being rediscovered.

My Dr. actually told me to take Glucosamine for my joints and fish oil for my cholesterol. They both work.

Sir.
Yes!!
Your health is the result your diet, genetics, attitude and life style. You start out young and healthy, you should try to stay that way.
Health food store supplements should be better for you than optional ingredients in a fast food, window burger.
Yuma is a retirement community in the winter. All the flea market type places have many popular supplements for the snowbirds. They all seem to work until someone dies. They may prolong your health.
I used several joint supplements on an old quarterhorse. They came from a Vet. supply place. I tried them on me for several years. My joints feel fine until I go north and get cold. Only side effect was some strange habits in the bedroom.
Stress will kill you faster than a bad diet.

On the recommendation of my doctor I take 3000 mg of fish oil a day for cholesterol problems. At my last checkup the doctor said my cholesterol and triglycerides were "perfect," though it's hard to say how much the fish oil helped, as I'm also taking Simvastatin and have been low-carbing it for the last eight months, which really drops the triglycerides.

NO OFFENSE, JCMACK, But....

I wish you hadn't asked for no wise-cracks, I'm sure there's some
excellent ones just waiting to be used. Spotteddog told me about
Bilberry capsules for help with night-vision. It works for me!
Never had much luck with glucosamine or chondroitin.
Since I've always found good advice here, I'll be trying flaxseed.

As far as the comments are concerned, I have to laugh with each
new ailment I get. Just trying to guess what it'll be.
I use to get sick EVERY winter, until I took daily vitamins and kept my
upper body warm. Never happened again.
Glad you posted about this, TACC1.

I'm in. I take a Mega-Red Omega-3 in am and 1000mg fish oil capsule at night. My cholesterol is good and I'm a meat and potatoes eater.

I take a Multi Vitamin and two fish oil capsules every day.
We do not eat as much fish as we used to. I don't catch any really heavy oil fish and to buy fish other than farm raised crap is to expensive,

The wife and I started with the fish oil capsule several years ago. I was looking for something on the internet and found 10 major university studies, around the world, touting the use of fish oil. All of the studies indicated good results and no chance of any side effects. Some time later it was being pushed by cereals, skin creams and just about anything else. It appears to agree with both of us. While we are on the subject of non medicinal products - try peanut oil on muscle aches and pains. Usually works in several hours.

I use flax seed for my dog's dry/itchy skin.It seems to work and his coat is very soft.YMMV

That's how I was tuned to this subject again. Both my little dogs were scratchin up a storm. A trip to the vet and she showed me the little long hair Chihuahua had extremely dry skin. The vet recommended fish oil. So since last Weds. me and the dogs have been doing fish oil. I see less irritation on the dogs part. My coat has always been smooth and shiney, but I hope my arthritic thumb joints improve. I like multivites but the B12 in them gives me an appetite.

I never thought about the B12 but I've been being better about taking my multi's and am hungry more than usual. But that's OK cause I'm 6'1" and 175lbs.with a small beer gut that goes away in the off season.
I hope what ever you do works for you.
Also let me say that I've heard gelatin works and it used to be pretty cheap but I haven't looked in a long time.

Basically you are asking about the benefit of omega-3 oils. There is a lot of research that says yes, it's very beneficial. I think the question is in what form you are willing to ingest it, and how much you are willing to pay. There was an interesting article on the subject August 3 in the Roanoke Times. A few of the alternatives given for getting your omega-3 (if you don't like or have adverse reaction to fish oil):
1. Get DHAs from algae, not fish oil. Some choices: Life's DHA from Martek, sold online. Spring Valley (available online), Finest Natural (Walgreens), and Natrol DHA-Omega-3 (CVS).
2. Eat 3 servings per week of canned salmon, canned white tuna, or fresh trout.
3. Munch on a dozen walnuts per day. Sprinkle ground flaxseed on your yogurt or drizzle flaxseed oil on your salad.

I have taken Omega 3 and 6 fish oil for several years after my Dr. recommended them, the only thing I have found is sometimes I can burp and taste salmon patties or fish cakes. Jeff

My Cardiologist insists hi patients takw 2000 units fish oil and 2000 of viatmain D per day.
I also take glucosamine and chondroitin no idea if it works or not? I have read that WD40 rubbed on joints (not swallowed!) keeps them pain free, never tried it.
Steve W.

My Doc also reccomends the fish oil. Does it really work? I dunno, but it doesn't cost much and unlike perscription meds the fish oil can't hurt you. I have also heard that rubbing WD40 on your joints helps pain & stiffness, and like the fish oil whether it works or not, it won't hurt you any.

Greetings,,

I take two Glucosamine and Chontroitin capsules, one in the morning, and one in the evening, plus one fish oil capsule every morning. My old joints KNOW that they help, and have for years! I will keep taking them, as my life is better because of those two supplements. For what it's worth..... Take care, and God Bless!

Every Good Wish,
Doc

P.S. I get my stuff at Costco, and don't know how other brands work. But, the Costco stuff is outstanding!

I've been taking fish oil gelcaps for the past several months. It seems to keep my joints feeling better. Once in a while I burp and it tastes like the cod liver oil I had to take as a kid. :)
