I lost touch with a friend in the Navy. After 30 years, I put his name in facebook. His photo was one of the first ones on the list. I took one look at the thumbnail and knew it was Andy.

I hope you have similar success!

Thank you for your help. The idiot I thought was a friend shot and killed his wife in March 2009. Go figure, no I'm not kidding.

Hi there.
I just got an email notification of your thread on the S&W forum.
I have just finished creating a website that deals with this problem. It's free, obligation-free (no registration), SAFE, and works in any part of the world (where there is internet access).
I came out from England over 50 years ago with my parents and other siblings, and have not been in contact with any of my friends since.
I've looked at some of the "services" that are on the net, but found none was satisfactory for me for one or more reasons. Some are expensive (even when they claim to be free), most require sensitive information about yourself or your friend to be made public, and some only work in one area (eg. USA).
Because of this I decided to create my own site that would overcome these problems, and after a couple of false starts, I believe this one does that. It's still very empty, but I expect this will change once it is on the search-engines.
The website is at http://findlostfriends.yolasite.com and you are welcome to visit and try it or to just look around.
Good luck in your search. Best Regards, Phil.

Gad! This is a perfect example of why I will never join Facebook or similar sites. My philosophy, for myself, anyway, is just let the past be the past.

I just think the whole idea of looking up long lost friends in the first place, from way back when, if you weren't interested enough to maintain fairly constant contact since, is very likely to be more trouble than I would want....

No thanks.

Did he post that on his Facebook page?

That is horrible, and a horrible way to find out too.

My sympathies on the loss of a friend.

If you know what state he was from you might try what I did to locate a fellow I served with at North Island NAS during WW2.
Over the years I had tried every way that I knew to find him or what happened to him.
I knew that he was originally from Iowa so about five years ago I emailed the Iowa governor's office and explained my situation and asked if there was anyway they could assist me in locating him. I got an email back from the lt.governor's office saying they would try to locate him. The next day I got a call giving me his location and phone number.
I called him and we had several long conversations and lots of emails before he died two years later. The sad thing was that while attending college after the war he was stricken with polio and was
for the most part confined in a wheel chair. He married his nurse, got his law degree(was past President of the Iowa State Bar Association), raised a family and from some of the info his wife sent after his death had been a very productive citizen.
He was the Chief Petty Officer over our group and there was never a better person to serve under and being able to renew our aqquaintance was very rewarding even for just a short time.

Well ABC you can always look on the web for inmates for that state. I have a relative that's been in for a while, and I keep a check to make sure he does not get out anytime soon.

For the benefit of anybody who might still be looking for somebody after ABC's horrible experience, here is how I found an old Army buddy who proved hard to find. I remember that he was a graduate of a certain college so I wrote the alumni association and enclosed a stamped envelope with a note to the old friend. I asked the alumni association to forward the note if they had his address. They graciously did so, and I was able to reestablish contact!
