Trying to find children's book

Now that the baby is here, I am trying to find a children's book that I had when I was a kid. It was a short story about a dog that loved to dig holes but finally dug one so deep he could not get out. (And no it wasn't Clifford). I remember three stories from when I was a kid that I was read, that one, Mike Mulligan, and The Little Engine that Could. I have the last two, just working on the one with the dog if I can ever remember or find out the name of it.

Never heard of it, but that reminds me of a wooden sign in a yard in LaPorte, Colorado:
